Re: Special offer from The Natural Dog Food Company!
I would welcome some advice please. I have a 6 month Old English Sheepdog puppy.Started off on pedigree puppy for 2 weeks and soon realised what a mistake that was. Put him on Arden Grange puppy and his stools were firm. He has been on Natural dog food puppy chicken for 3 months after finding the website and noticed his stools were a little less firm but ok., adding some cooked chicken, sardines, tuna a few times. Tried him on a spoonful of butchers tripe canned food mixed in which loosened his stools. Stopped that but he would not eat natural without adding something. Tried him Nature diet puppy which claims to be natural etc, mixed with natural dog food. again stools were loose. I dont want to take him off Natural dog food but am considering trying Arden Grange again. any advice on what to mix in without loosening him please.Just wonderd where I might be going wrong. Thanks James.

Firstly, and it’s going to sound harsh, but you have to be firm with fussy dogs. Dogs are learning machines and as we all know the best way of getting them to learn a new behaviour is with tasty treats. If your dog sits when you say sit, give him a treat and he will quickly learn to sit on command. Well the same thing happens when you effectively give your dog a treat whenever he refuses food. The first time he may have turned his nose up simply because he wasn’t hungry, but by adding tasty foods to the meal to get him to eat you are actively training your dog to be fussy. I always recommend putting the food down alone at meal times for no longer than 15 minutes before picking it up. Do the same the next meal and the next and pretty soon he will realise that his treat isn’t coming and will begin to eat happily. This is not to say that I am against adding foods to a diet – far from it, but it is important to stop fussy behaviour as soon as you can. Once he is settled back on to Natural Dog Food, if you do want to add things to his diet I would recommend adding meat (cooked or raw) together with cooked vegetables to maintain the dietary balance. Foods like these can not only help to give your dog a robust digestive system but can actually reduce fussiness. The last thing to take a look at is the amount being fed. Our recommended feeding amounts are relatively low due to the very high digestibility of the foods. This means that it is easy to overfeed which can result in minor digestive upsets and of course refusal of food. It is particularly important to always reduce the amount of Natural Dog Food being fed to offset for any additions being made. I really hope this helps but if there is anything else I can do at all please be sure to let me know. All the very best, David |

Re: Special offer from The Natural Dog Food Company!
Hi David
Glad to see you are doing so well, we'll catch up with you at Heckington Show, would like to pick your brains tho, we are in the lucky position of getting a new springer pup, should pick her up at end of July. What do you recommend to start her feeding on? She won't be a working dog but she will be very active.

I'm really looking forward to the Heckington show. Despite being based in Heckington we've never managed to attend until this year. Promises to be a great show though. A springer puppy! I’m so jealous! We always recommend staying on whatever the breeder has been feeding for 1-2 weeks after receiving the puppy as it can be quite a stressful time and the last thing you want to do is add to her stress with a dietary change. Once she is settled in though either one of our puppy foods –chicken or salmon – would be absolutely fine, even for a very active puppy. The puppy chicken has always been very popular but since we introduced the salmon variety last year it has gone down a storm. I’ll put some samples of both aside for you at the show so you can see which she prefers. |
