What area are you in? Have you had a Basset before? My family are lifelong Basset owners and they are just THE BEST DOGS IN THE WORLD, with a unique character and affectionate nature!!!
Some friends of mine who breed and show Bassets are very reluctant to let them go to some homes, where people have not experienced the breed before, partly I think because of their 'stubborness' because you have to have a lot of patience with them as they have 'selected deafness' and prefer to follow their nose than listen to their owner and also the breeders don't want them going to a new home if the owner has lost patience or not had enough time for their dog. You only have to look on this website (Preloved - link below)and type in 'Basset Hound' in the search and see how many pups and young Basset Hounds sadly, are looking for homes... but better to find kind new owners than not be able to take care of a Basset. Maybe there is one that will suit you near to where you live, or, if as you said you don't mind travelling... one further afield. http://www.preloved.co.uk/ --- There are some reputable Basset Hound breeders on here>> http://www.champdogs.co.uk/ Over many years, my family have always had either two or three Basset Hounds.. including pups and older ones as also we've always rescued some at various ages, including a blind older dog who had Glaucoma and was blind in one eye first and went on to be completely blind and he just broke my heart but we gave him a good life with his new Basset friends who seemed to sense he was blind and he followed them around. We have occasionally rehomed ex-breeding bitches who have gone on to lead long and happy lives. I have two sister pups at the moment and they are just so adorable and totally inseparable. Bassets are pack dogs who love other Bassets and love people as well and they are brilliant with children and babies and do well in a pair if you have the space and time. ![]() Last edited by BassetLover; 24-09-2009 at 02:48 PM.. |

Re: Basset Hound puppy wanted
Hi
I am in Huddersfield west yorkshire. Yes we are really sad about having to let him go, and our three year old will be heartbroken but it really isnt fair on Monty. Where abouts are you? Do you know of anyone that is looking for a bassett pup? Obviously someone who has more time to spend with him that we currently do. Zara |

Re: Basset Hound puppy wanted
Aww that is such a shame. Bassets are pack hounds and love company of people and especially other Bassets and it's such a pity that you're out all day because it will be very miserable, bored and unhappy, like we all would if left alone, but as people, we can choose to do lots of things to relieve our boredom but sadly, dogs can't and you are right to try and find a lovely caring home for your Basset.
I'm in Scotland so too far away and a good friend of mine is also in Scotland and he too is a very caring Basset owner and has taken on unwanted dogs in the past just as I have.... I'm sure if you were closer he'd love your Basset as he has loads of enclosed land attached to his cottage in the country. The breeder where I got mine, who I had my dear old Basset who sadly died last year, always carefully vets people who want one of his Bassets and he always turns away people who are out all day or who have not thought long and hard and learned about the breed because he doesn't want any of his pups to be in the same situation as yours and he would rather take it back and give a refund. I wonder if you could contact your pup's breeder to explain your situation as he may well know of someone who would like a Basset and if he's anything like my breeder, he likes to know where his dogs are and keeps in contact with the owner just to know that all is well. Have you got a picture you can put up as it might just attract attention. Who are his parents/grandparents to see if ours are related? Edit: Sadly there are quite a few Basset Hounds looking for homes, also some people wanting them but I can't see anyone in your area here on this website! http://www.preloved.co.uk/ Last edited by BassetLover; 08-10-2009 at 11:52 PM.. |
