wanted young dog (puppy)

My son and his wife are due a bay soon and would really like a puppy so that the dog and baby grow up together, Mys son has been around German Shepherds all of his life. But at the monment they do not ahave a dog. We have been looking at our local rescue centers but they don't appear to have any dogs that are suitable to have around young children. We live in north east lincolnshire

Re: wanted young dog (puppy)

To be honest, I'm not sure that now would be the best time to get a puppy with the new baby arriving. Puppies, like babies require a great deal of attention and training, and your son and his wife will have their hands full with the new baby. Why not wait till the new baby is older - they can still grow up together, but at a time when they have the time to dedicate to bringing pup up.

Re: wanted young dog (puppy)

sounds very idyllic but i agree with dundee, having a newborn is enough work in itself with out having to attend to the needs of a puppy, rescues are a bit funny about rehoming with young children.I think that they should carefully consider this first before making any decisions

Re: wanted young dog (puppy)

I understand what you are saying, but my son grew up from being a baby with german shepherds and so have other children in my family. I think it is because they have just moved house and it is in not a very good area and a dog would make them feel more secure. I would rather they wait also as a new baby does alter things in the house... a lot

Re: wanted young dog (puppy)

I'm not saying it's wrong to have dogs and babies - if they had a dog now there wouldn't be a problem. I realise he grew up with dogs and has been around dogs, but has he ever had his own puppy as an adult? Raising a puppy is hard work and the puppy deserves the attention that raising one requires. I know I sound like a killjoy, but I also remember (just) how much time and attention a new baby requires. I feel it would be wholly unfair to have a new puppy at this time. In a year or so, fine, but having a new puppy at the same time as a new baby, the poor puppy has a high risk of ending up a rescue statistic.

Re: wanted young dog (puppy)

When I bred several years ago, a cousin of mine said exactly the same thing, took the pup just after the baby arrived, two weeks later he had to bring it back as they couldn't cope, luckily for me I had another home for the pup.
Also, with the life span of a dog, if they got it now, the dog would probably die about the time that the child was at a very important time in their lives.
I personally would think it best when the child is a toddler

Re: wanted young dog (puppy)

Sorry, I should have mentioned this in my last post Dundee, but if they did have a pup it would never end up a rescue..... it would come to me I lost 2 dogs this year who were rescues, any animal that comes into my life is for life and I am lucky that I can do that.... But I totally understand what everyone has said and I will be talking to them both, Because I had Sven as a pup when my son was born 23 years ago, and other family members have had pups with their babies and had no problems that isn't to say they won't.
But as I have said I have taken on board what you have all said and it has made me think about it differently
