yes i will happily do that for you. they have had a lot of interest inthem already but so far no one has been suitable enough for their needs. but i'm sure it woint be too long before they end up somewhere nice. the basenji's i think are lovely looking dogs and to be honest i have never seen a basenji in the flesh, only in pictures.

Thank you.
No you don't see many about, though in saying that when I lived in Catterick their was 2 living there. I was driving along one day and saw a man with one so screeched to a halt and spoke to him. I think he was just pleased that someone new what breed it was. The other time I was walking mine on a field and a lady pulled up in a van and said I have got a Basenji in here so she got her out for me to see. I new the breeders of both of them so it was nice to be able to tell them at the next show that their dogs were all doing fine.

That is a huge relief. It is sad that someone should make a joke about a dogs welfare and mistreatment.

Sorry but Hip scores are a matter of public record, just sad that the Kennel Club charge people to see the information rather than allow free access like more enlightened Kennel clubs (for example the Finnish kennel clubs Koiranet).

As for saying health results are only of interest for those wanting to use a dog, if people don't know to ask (even the dogs owner didn't know) then all you get is more ignorant breeding.

Before anyone offers a dog at stud or risks their bitch by mating her they should know all they can about breeding.

This means the basic mechanics of reproduction, genetics, breed standards, canine physical and mental development, and the whole big picture, which includes responsibilities and the effects of ones actions.

I constantly see ignorance being offered up as some excuse.

If you don't know what your doing don't do it.

A doctor can't practise medicine without knowing their subject.

Anyone breeding is equally responsible for lives, not just canine ones, but possibly human ones.

Offering a male at stud of a large guarding breed not knowing what the faults of temperament may lie behind their own dog let alone the bitches lines, then pups being sold to perhaps unsuitable homes, next headline Dog kills child.

Can't happen? Someone bred that Rottie, and someone else made a mess of rearing it, and then finally someone stuck it outside as a guard.

So we should all just let people get on with making mistakes???? Because the truth hurts?

Also the Kennel Club doesn't have Registered Breeders? It registers dogs, Kennel names/affixes, Clubs and Societies.

I see you mean you have a registered Kennel name/Affix and are a member of the Accredited Breeder Scheme.

Smile Re: german shepherd for stud

Hi Everyone,

I noticed some people on contributing to this thread have a lot of knowledge about when to offer your dog at stud and what needs to be done beforehand. I think it would be a great idea if you could share this information and maybe write a really good article about it for our Pet Encyclopedia.

This way, instead of interrogating users, we could just point them to the article in the pet encyclopedia and ask them to read it so that they fully understand everything involved before they offer their dog at stud, and we could create a sticky in the dog breeding section which points to the Article, so anyone who wants to stud their dog can read it and get all the facts beforehand.

If we have any willing volunteers, please reply or if you already know how to update the pet encyclopedia you could go ahead and update the article, I have created an empty one here. The more factual information everyone can add the better and i'm sure it will be a great help to everyone who uses this site:

Thanks
Mark

Re: german shepherd for stud

Good idea. Should it be a joint effort?

Looked at the link, could you elaborate what the headings should contain.

The Kennel club have several articles on responsible breeding, and there are some really good articles around on the net several of which I keep as favourites, obviously they would need linking to avoid plagiarism?.
