Re: german shepherd for stud

well as i said in my previous posts i am only willing to let my boy out to stud, once he has had his tests done and if they all come back ok. then i will let him stud as his tempermant is excellent and is a good quality shepherd. i do feel sad when i see all these dogs in rescue centres. but a lot of it is because they get fed up with the dog, or their circumstances change. someone could buy a top quality well bred pup and it could still end up in a rescue centre. we often go to our centre and are volunteer dog walkers. there's a very nice elkhound along with her freind an elkhound both females looking for homes. they have both been baited by someone. but they still seem like lovely dogs. it's such a shame someone has done this to them and hopefully the right owner will come along for them.

He can have the Haemophilia test but Hips can't be scored until the dog is fully grown at a minimum of a year. It takes up to two months for the results to come back.

He would be penalised for his lack of correct colouration, but of course could be shown as there are no disqualifying faults in the UK show-ring.

He would have to be so much better than the competiton in all other respects to have this fault overlooked.

Why not attend some shows and see what you should be aiming for.

Here: Championship,_Open_&_Limit_Dog_Shows

you will find lots about showing (Tips for beginners) and dates of shows

Also the Kennel Club website The Kennel Club has lots of info on all the issues raised.

The Kennel Club should be able to advise you of local Ringcraft classes so you and he can learn how to prance around a ring. More importantly to accept being examined, having hsi body felt over, testicles checked and teeth looked at.

He can go to shows from 6 months of age, but entries usually close a month or two before the show.

Please let me have details of these Elkhounds to pass onto rescue, so they can help home them, they have a waiting list of homes.

Responsibly bred pups go back to their breeders if the owenrs circumstances change, they don't end up in rescue centres, even if the previous owner doesn't tell the breeder most breeders now Tattoo or microchip their pusp so they can be trced back to them.

What do you mean by they have been baited?

Re: german shepherd for stud

i will certainley look into this and perhaps train him and see what he likes befoe i do anything like entering him properly. i have been more about rescuing dogs and having them as companions rather than the showing side of things. but i might give it a go. i also have a crossbred shepherd and i know a lot of people don't like crossbreeds but he was asvertised as a pure shepherd and when we got there turns out he was 3 quarter shepherd and 1 quarter douge de bordeaux. we seen both his parents and were a bit iffy but we decided to take him on and he has proved to e a wonderful dog now aged 18 months old. he is one of the best tempered dogs i have ever had (apart from a stffy named bruno who sadly passed away last year). i would never think about breeding from him as i wouldn't want to put more crossbreeds out there but i am also very glad he's in my life. here is a pic of him:

Re: german shepherd for stud

the rescue centre wont let them go to another rescue centre as if this was the case they would put each and every breed with different breed rescue centres. they will find them a home eventually. a woman that works there said they had cats dangled in front of them to bring out their nastiness and then to attack and kill the cats so that they can bait them to rip up cats for fun and to also fight with other dogs. but if youmet these dogs you would never think this has happened to them as they seem so docicle! but then again i haven't seen them around any cats!

To be honest an Elkhound would be the wrong kind of dog to bait, (they are a tracking and distraction dog, all noise and bluff) as that just isn't their nature.

Most general rescues do co-operate with breed rescues as they know that the breed people have the expertise and usually people waiting.

Our rescue does not have a centre, dogs that can't be homed direct from their old home are either fostered or they use a boarding kennel near one of the workers.

We have dealt with Private Rescues and Blue Cross and Dogs Trust with re-homing the breed, and dogs that had been lounging were soon homed.

Please give the centre details so rescue can contact them.

Re: german shepherd for stud

we have been to the centre today and they do not want us giving you information due to the fact that they need specalist homes because they were baited.

This really infuriates me,they want homes yet refuse to pass on details to the Breed Rescue who have more experience with the breed than general all breed rescues.

Just out of interest which rescue is it?PM me if you don't want to put it on the board.
