There really is no such thing. Such people are simply exploiting the breed and gullible buyers, when there are far too many GSD's in rescue as it is.

A pedigree litter should be bred to the highest standards or not at all.

All the pups are first and foremost pets. Even if you showed every week of the year that would still leave you over 300 days of being just a pet.

Being a Pet is the hardest thing a dog can do, and therefore the highest standards should be expected.

There is no excuse for producing sub standard pups to be pets. People looking for a Pedigree pet should expect typical characteristics for the breed. If they don't they can go to a rescue centre to take pot luck.

For most people the only acceptable form of advertising is to advertise what the dog has to offer the breed by his outstanding type proven in the showring, or outstanding working ability.

After all good breeders have the choice of the top dogs in the breed. An unknown unproven dog is unlikely to attract reputable bitch owners, and the litters produced will simply add to the rescue problem, which is the reason for the negative tone of some posts.

There are plenty of pups left over in a litter from outstanding parents when the most promising workers or show prospects are chosen to simply be pets, occasionally some of these will be non standard in colour and coat.

Re: german shepherd for stud

so dogs were created for showing purposes only were they? i have no interest in showing dogs. and my sheppherds are my companions and loving pets. they get loads of activity and exercise and go to taining and agility and swimming etc, etc! i really have no interest in prancing a dog around a show ring to win a rosette at all. there are mor people out there that want a dog as a pet and companion then those who want to show etc

Re: german shepherd for stud

the breed of dog you have elkhound's require a lot of exercise and amusement. do you do this for your dogs or you just keep them in kennels and then prance them around a show ring and make money from breeding them. there are also a lot ekhounds in rescue centres close to me.

Re: german shepherd for stud

also the main thing about breeding dogs is their temperments. if you have two nice german shepherds that are pedigree and kc reg and have had all the tests done etc. then there is no resaon why they can't breed. i think a good temperment in a dog is the most important thing and way important than show quality anyday

Re: german shepherd for stud

They are bred to the breed standard - hence why they are worthy of "prancing around a ring"
And for the record I dont prance!!!! I have to agree about the breeding pets topic here - if you are going to breed then why not breed to as close to the breed standard as possible - its there for a reason - a certain breed should LOOK like what it is.......thats the point!
Also keeping dogs in a kennel only and never doing anything with them would not then later prane around a ring - so maybe the majority show people work even harder to make sure our pets are happy at shows!

Re: german shepherd for stud

You posted again while I was typing - IF you have 2 GSDs who are pedigree and kc reg who have had all the tests done and they have come back with good results then I dont see a problem if its all done right. Why should a pet be inferior to a show pup? They may be no good for the ring but at least if bred in the correct manner with all relevant tests done etc they will make great pets who are healthy and have good natures......

Re: german shepherd for stud

I don't prance either.
If my dogs didn't want to show then they wouldn't do it, their show results speak for themselves. My dogs live as part of the family and are pets first then show dogs. My dogs enjoy going to shows just as much as I do, and I think I can speak for others on this.
The breed standard is there for a reason so we can keep breeds as close to what they should be.
The majority of the pups that I have bred have gone to pet homes but at least they know that the parents are close to the breed standard and ahve had relevant health tests done.

Re: german shepherd for stud

to your last reply debbie i agree strongly with that. and that was the point that i was making. we are not in it for the show status. we have had lots of comments on our gsd and have been told by a breeder that he would of made such a lovely show dog, but i don't think he would of liked it. he's more of a rough and tumble dog. and we work very hard in keeping our dogs happy and amused and have them checked out reguraly. because it would break our hearts if something happened to them
