Hunting

Does anyone else's dog hunt?

We walk a set walk each morning and evening round 2 farmers fields, at the end of the walk this is a rabbit warren (thats right huh?) anyway, the minute we get to the entrance of field too Bramble starts stalking, getting low in the long grass and snakes his way up the warren and then he sniffs the air, sits and waits for the rabbits to come. He's not caught one yet but he's given it a good go. - he is most upset for the best part of an hour if the rabbits don't come out.

Anyone else got a hunter?

Re: Hunting

My Terrier loves and I mean loves chasing rabbits, he will go sniffing them out and then I will suddenly see them running along the grass and him bouncing as fast as he possibly can behind! He also likes to chase squirrels and when he was younger he was terrible for chasing black birds to (he has only ever caught one black bird) hes never caught anything else. Thankfully

Re: Hunting

Strangly enough considering the breeds of my dogs they are not interested in hunting but saying that we live in the middle of a town so we don't see a lot of rabbits. William did once try to chase a squirrel up a tree. He literally tried to climb the tree. God that dog is so thick.

Re: Hunting

Take Chazz for a walk and he is always chasing the birds and squirrels! Never catches them cause he doesnt stalk! Just runs at them. However the last couple of walks he is sniffing alot more into holes and on the floor, following scents! Fearing Im gonna lose him down a hole! Oh, just remembered, over the park where I take him there is a pond with ducks and coots on, as you go down a hill you get to it, the hill is slightly steep! So when he sees them he runs down the hill and one of these days I am gonna hear a splash at the end of it!!!!

Re: Hunting

Wl most of my dogs are bred and trained to hunt haa!

But Bess who is just meant to be a family pet and the occasionally pest disposer. Is mad keen on hunting Typical Patt
If she see's something she will stop dead in her tracks even if she has two paws off the floor. She'll slowly creep towards it, almost cat like its weird then burst at the last minute, most of them are birds or squirrels near trees or rabbits near burrows so she never really gets anything only the occasional rat at night time in summer in the fields next to the barns Crazy dog

Re: Hunting

Maya is a real hunter.... i stopped counting the endless rabbits and pheasants and mice and birds she killed

Thankfully i managed to get her behaviour under control with alot of work and she will still do the tracking but if told to leave she will not chase....

lol...my busters parents were both working terriers, but he would have def been a reject of the family business haha.
We used to have a problem with birds getting into the spare room and he would chase them round and round the room but once cornered he never knew what to do so turned round and ran the other way...i think he wanted it to chase him by this time we had caught the poor thing and taken it back outside!

We had a similar thing with a mouse in the kitchen...he chased it but got bored once it was cornered so that was saved too!
