Re: Hunting

Woody hunts birds but his mum is a rabbit dog. both will come back if called though. I actually usually let Woody get into full chase and then call him back to practise his recall.

Re: Hunting

Mine will only point and flush, he knows if he chases and gets in the way a big angry bird will smack the back of his head.

Re: Hunting

My JRT is in 'paid' work, he's used by the local farmers for ratting and we get given meat for his hours work. He used to work flushing rabbits for the gamekeeper but proved not very good at the job..which is why he was handed into rescue.

My beagle x staffie is useless...you'd think with a beagle nose she could sniff out a rabbit but they could run over her head and she'd not notice!!!

The poodle x beddy is pretty good but given a choice of rabbit or ball, then ball wins everytime!! Although that said in his youth he killed a couple of lambs and some of my dad chickens which didn't go down well!!! Had to take him to a working trainer to sort out his prey drive..worked extreamly well and I can now walk amougst stock safely..infact he comes riding with me in the sheep fields and chases the horse not the sheep!!

The staffy hasn't a clue...he's a lover not a fighter and would prefer a cuddle over bothering to chase anything!!

My old mutt boy was the best hunter, bless it's awful seeing him now cos he can only manage a slow walk but you can tell he's still wanting to live those days of roaming the fields and hunting out those pesky rabbits. I'd told him the deal was he was supposed to have a heart attack chasing a rabbit when his time was up...he's not following that deal and I'm not happy.

Oh and my 'new' boy well I suspect he will be a chaser considering he's lurcher and even at 5 months is stalking and pouncing things on walks, so far it's only been dead crisp packets etc but I don't think it will be long before he sets his sights on rabbits...good job I've nearly sorted his recall cos I think we will need it!!

Re: Hunting

my kia is a stalker and chaser to ; The only things she is interested are birds -ducks and pigeons , not the swans though and squirrels . She raised a bunny so when she sees one she starts crying and wants to sniff and kiss him .
SHE DOSE LIKE TO CHASE cat's but just for playing not to kill .

Re: Hunting

My patterdalex is a brilliant ratter and he will indicate if they are around in the stables so I can then carefully put poison down, he is never wrong. Him and my lurcher will hunt anything so i have to be carefull and keep them on leads when theres the likelihood of foxes or rabbits around. They are brilliant with stock and chickens and ignore sheep. It helped a lot as when the terrier was half grown I had a pet ewe and when she had lambs she butted him a few times and hes never forgotton. The lurcher will sight hunt anything inc birds but luckily we havnt got many rabbit warrens around us. I dread them catching one as i couldnt put it out of its misery if they didnt kill it,

Re: Hunting

Mine like to chase squirrels and birds although I dont think they would know what to do with one if they caught it. They have caught a bird and a fox before (both sick!!).
I wouldnt let Hannah off anywhere near rabbits though, she is just stupid enough to disappear down a warren and get stuck!!
