It's not a tax. It's insurance. An annual license fee (paid to government) would be a tax.

Insurance is already a legal requirement for some owners - still costs less than a bag of dog food.

Secondly, all home and contents insurance covers any damage caused by your pet as the policies contain public liability cover.
But it won't cover you if you (or, rather, the dog) are away from the home.

Thirdly, let's wait and see how long it will take before peoples dogs will get attacked by passers by in hopes their dog retaliates with a bite so they can claim compensation on the insurance.
I would guess a similar number to those that throw themselves in front of cars for the compensation - very few.

And finally, my hearts will go out to all those extra abandoned dogs and all the elderly people who struggle to make ends meet on there state pensions who won't be able to afford their new dog tax resulting in more homeless pets and lonely pensioners being denied a companion.
It costs less than a bag of dog food. If an owner cannot provide that then can they provide the other essentials?

Thanks new labour
It's part of a Defra consultation process, it's not currently Labour policy.

Re: Third Party Insurance

mhmmmm
i think the odgs Trust is kinda riding the waves...it was £12 the membership a couple of months ago...and it covered also damages to livestock (i was too late in doing it as i couldn't find the Mchip number of my crazy girl and had to wait to next vet appointment to take note of it).

i hope the DT 's getting a little money in!

thanks to the op
best

I've just taken insurance out and all my quotes included tp cover. The companies only asked if the dogs were working dogs or trained to attack or guard.

It's a side issue but - be careful with the wording of ALL insurance policies. If you show your pet many companies count that as working.

Most companies will refuse cover to working dogs and to dogs which have shown any previous form of aggravation - real or suspected.

On the bright side the vast majority of policies cover third-party liability for £1m. Some cover for £2m (depends on the policy/company).

If you don't want the normal vet cover (i.e. you are 100% certain your pet will never need thousands of pounds spent on it in a vet) then the Dog's Trust deal is quite a good one. And, of course, you are really paying to support their work.
