i didnt think the kc organised these? you dont have to register before hand to enter them... they are free to enter at any game fair? I think the judges have to be recognised by them though?

field trial dogs are 1 in every 1000 ... a trainer or field trialler will buy and sell 100's of dogs a year to find that one dog with potential. These are dogs that are then trained by people who know how to both handle a dog and get the most out of it. Its not impossible to achieve... but the marking is hyper sensitive on what keeps a dog in and what will throw a dog out. Mutts arent usually used, they are more like phenomenal dogs.

Re: Gundog Training/Tracking

My neighbour has 3 highly trained gun dogs black labs.
He uses them for shooting and picking up and trials and works for a lord somebody at a statly home with the dogs.

The dogs are so perfectly behaved it not true, they never take their eyes off their owner even when not working, they would never come and see mine without given permisson to do so.
I do feel slightly sorry for them at times as its as if they are programed in the brain not to do anything unless told...which i suppose they have to be or they could get shot

Re: Gundog Training/Tracking

Thats why I asid earlier, why would you have a pet trained to such levels and not use it. If all say the OP wanted them to do was heel this can be achieved by obedience lessons. The amount of behaviours used in gundog work wouldnt be applied in the real world or at working tests. Whilst its good to keep them active there has to be a cumlmination of events for them to recognise why things are done.

what misinformation is that?

edit: would really like an answer on that:
The KC dont orgainise working tests, they may have to be a KC reg dog to enter them but their KC names arent taken unless your at a very high level - trail standard using live game
what use is close quatering in everyday circumstances
what use is a dog stopping at 50m for direction in everyday events
what use is the out command?
or the stop whistle even -- for them to not run into roads? as if your approaching a road other commands would be used?

I mention these as they have to be practiced everyday to get any kind of form - without practice everday you can never rely on them EVER to keep your dog safe. I cant think of any applications for gundog training outside of the field when their activities have to be repeated and practiced daily?. Entering working tests at game fairs and the like dont use all their skills, they dont use quatering or holding an area, they neither use the stop at distance or arm directions. Working dogs have stamina built into them that isnt required for a 30min test, its needed for a 6 hour beat?

if im wrong on any of this then please point it out!?

HVS - Working Tests

Scurries

These are the best discriminations of each test that I could find.
The first has to be done by very exceptional dogs, the second though different for each type of gundog, is possible for anyone to do if you find the right club. The third can be enjoyed by anyone who has the nerve
