Re: Carrots

On a similar note - does anyone know of any reasons why you shouldn't give grapes to your dog? Tron ate one yesterday & then my OH said he thought they were bad but couldn't remember why or where he heard it...

Re: Carrots

I think it's the same thing they're mildly poisonous to dogs. I'm sure one or two won't affect him much though

Re: Carrots

Yeah apparently they are toxic...have to say my dogs have all eaten them at some point and never had any problem. Like most things I think in moderation they are fine.

Re: Carrots

Yeah, my dog has had his fair share of grapes as well! I wouldn't feed them to him, but I don't think that snaffling the odd one will do any harm.

Thanks for the interesting info re wormers, JSR. Plenty of food for thought there!

I've got no scientific proof or whatever but 5 dogs all from different backgrounds and all different crosses, being walked on sheep and cattle land every day (and eating the droppings of course) and I've never wormed or had any worries then I can only put it down to diet and supplements.

Re: Carrots

I personally would not allow my dogs to have even 1 grape. When my westie was diagnosed with Addisons it was the first thing the vet asked, if she had eaten any raisins/grapes as she was going into kidney failure. Another vet said that some dogs will get away with eating grapes whereas others won't and even 1 could be harmful - I just don't see the point in taking the risk.

Grapes can cause renal failure, a frighteningly small amount can cause this if your dog has slight kidney problems.

Garlic's good to keep fleas at bay and the carotene in the carrots is quite effective against worms, though neither is much use if you already have an infestation. Also pumpkin seeds are supposed to have some active ingredient in them and eaten whole they really clean out the dog's insides well.

Got to say that I like the idea of not using chemicals.
