Exclamation My poor dog has a skin problem

i have a 3yr old staffy cross lab.. he went into a kennel over the xmas period and came back with there horrible black scabs on his neck. he went to the vets and they been giving him steroids, anti-biotics, flea and tick drops but nothing is working. some days is seems to look worse than others.. they dont affect him he is still the manic bouncy dog as always. the vets are useless! im spending around £80 per week on vet bills. i have changed his food and shampoo to the hypoallergenic stuff too

he has just come out the shower, the pictures are of his neck.. you will notice that from this condition he is missing fur too... it is only the top of his neck thats like this no where else

i just dont know what to do, i cant afford to keep paying this money for something that doesnt work! please can someone give me advice

Re: My poor dog has a skin problem

You could give Stronghold a try because if it is mange this should cure it. Ask your vet to prescribe some, it just might work. My dog was treated for 18 months for food allergies when all the time it was sarcoptic mange and Stronghold cured it and he's been fine ever since, about 4 years now.

Re: My poor dog has a skin problem

I think you would need more than one dose to cure it. Did you use all three of the little vials? I had to use one every two weeks for six weeks and then another packet after that to clear it and my dog wasn't as bad as yours is.

If he came out of the kennels like that, then they should be paying for his treatment, not you, you expect your animal back in the same condition as you left it, you have a good case if you can prove that he left the kennels with the problem

Re: My poor dog has a skin problem

no... the box i got off the vets only had one vial.. it was deffo stronghold id forgot what it was called till you mentioned it.

i think it cost around £8

the last time i went was 2 weeks ago, i was told to give him the stronghold when i got home, the antibiotics was for another 2 weeks @ 2tabs a day, and the steriods dropped to one a day, then the last few days one every other. he finished his tablets today and as you can see from the pictures it still looks bad

i just dont know what i can try....

Re: My poor dog has a skin problem

Hi there, if it is mange, Stronghold does treat sarcoptic mange, but it doesnt necessarily clear it up after the first spot-on treatment. It recommends two consecutive months of treatment (so a second dose 4 weeks after when you put it on the last time). So you may not see any improvement for a while.

It does sound like it must be something like mange to have the sudden onset like that after the kennels. Have you called them to let them know what has happened?

Poor thing hope it clears up soon.

edit: this is what the stronghold instructions say:
Quote:
"Sarcoptic Mange (dogs)
For the complete elimination of sarcoptic mange mites in dogs, a single dose of Stronghold should be administered for two consecutive months."

Re: My poor dog has a skin problem

all that was on the box was what it was, how to apply and the vet details there was nothing about more treatment it was just a plain white box....

il call them up tomorrow and get some more, oh and with my vet... they charge a £20 fee everytime you take a animal there.... even if there is no treatment given is that normal?
