Izzy today.
Today, Izzy is thriving in her loving new home, where her devoted owners hand-feed her yogurt to aid her digestion.

Imagine trying to survive at half your healthy body weight.
While a healthy female Great Dane usually weighs 100 to 130 pounds, Izzy, a beautiful white Great Dane,
weighed only 53 pounds when her owner was reported to a local humane society in Ohio.

Izzy had been cruelly barricaded in a filthy garage. The floor was covered in trash and dark, runny feces –
a sign of malnutrition. There were no windows or ventilation of any kind... and no food or water dishes.

Izzy was barely alive. As soon as Lisa (a humane officer and president of the local humane society)
opened the garage door, the emaciated dog staggered out and collapsed. Her gums were white, her eyes
were sunken, and her bony body was covered in fleas and ants.

Izzy Finds a Loving Home
But thanks to caring donors like you, American Humane was able to help cover the cost of Izzy's extensive
medical treatment. Izzy was a beneficiary of their Second Chance® Fund, which provides funding to animal
shelters that rehabilitate abused and neglected pets.

Remarkably, Izzy now weighs nearly 100 pounds and is having the time of her life in her loving, new forever home.
Her devoted owners always leave food out for her to "graze" on, and even hand-feed her yogurt to aid her digestion.
It will certainly be a special holiday season for Izzy and her adoptive family!

As for Izzy's former owner, he was recently convicted of animal cruelty, sentenced to time in jail
and prohibited from owning animals in the future.
Please donate today to give more abused and neglected pets like Izzy the second chance they deserve!
Thank you,

Natasha

Re: WARNING - graphic: dog left to starve in garage; Ohio, USA

Sadly it happens more than you might think and many dogs are not found in time. On my blog post here Memoirs of a Mutt Mutterer: Dog Warden Days if you scroll down to the pictures you will see one poor soul that I found in a flat. He was like the dog above, skin streched over bone and utterly petrified. He too made a full recovery when rescued and then fed and cared for properly.

You would be surprised at what horrors can lurk behind the net curtains and garden gates of seemingly respectable folks and wealth of the owner has no bearing on that either.

Unhappy Re: re-feeding a starved animal is delicate work

re-feeding is always touchy -
a former boss of mine had a F (American-type choc-gundog) Lab housed with his (Brit-blockhead cream M).
at her worst, she weighed 35# - yet i could not get him prosecuted?!
the M dog in good condition weighed 110#, and in good condition
(when >> i << fed her), she weighed all of 63#. there was only ONE bowl in their shared run
for food... and NO water container at all? they drank run-off and their own puddled urine. (no - not joking.)

she had to fight that #$@! M-dog for every mouthful of food; my boss thought it was funny,
it sounded like feeding time in the lions den at the zoo, dear God, the snarling...
i could not get the local ACC or police to do a dam*ed thing.
one of my worst memories -
--- terry
