Anyone recognise the symptoms?

hello everybody. This is my first visit to Pet Forums and I'm hoping someone may be able to give me some advice about Herbert, my 9/10 year old Battersea terrier cross. Normally full of beans, he's been laid low for about 2 weeks, starting with a nasty stomach bug - diarrhoea not vomiting - which the vet treated with antibiotics - Metronidizol. The treatment left him very weak and listless, and he didn't really eat anything for about a week - just water and a few bits of white fish. he then began to throw up whatever he ingested so we took him off the antibiotics a day early and he improved a bit. Thought he was back on his feet again but he still has very little appetite and as a result is very low key and dreary. He tends to sleep most of the day anyway but is now very inactive (he may well be lacking energy due to lack of food) and even walks have become a battle. he CAN run about - I chased him as he ate an old bit of bread he found in the park this morning! - but is mostly walking like a geriatric. He's also prone to going into a bit of a trance, so I have wondered whether he still has an infection or perhaps a bladder problem? I know these can make humans nutty, so why not dogs? He has also started peeing in the house and this morning he'd had a pooh in the sitting room.....it's a bit like he's got dementia, sometimes he's with us and other times he aint!....I have tried every type of food to get him interested again, but so far it's limited to a couple of biscuits or bits of carrot a day. Obviously I'll take him back to the vet if it continues, but if anyone out there recognises the symptoms or has any tips for getting him to take an interest in eating again I'd be most grateful. Many thanks.

Re: Anyone recognise the symptoms?

You need to go back to the vet as soon as possible.

Sounds to me like he's in pain. I'd get him back this evening if you can get an appointment. Hope it's something and nothing and he's back to full health soon.

Re: Anyone recognise the symptoms?

I would definitely go back and describe all this to your vet.

Metronidazole (Flagyl) can have some side effects, which is what I think you're seeing there. Presumably your vet thought he was suffering from a Giardia infection... I remember reading recently that treatment with Panacur (Fenbendazole) - a gentle & effective wormer which can be bought over the counter in some pharmacies - had been found to be much better at treating giardia and has fewer or no side effects.

I agree with both of these guys here and you should def go back to the vet.

My woody was the same kind of. loss of appetite, weak, kept to his bed all day, throwing up.

My parents finally took him to the vet who at first diagnosed him with a pancreatic infection and said to take him to the animal hospital. My dad did that and they took his bloods and the tests came back to show his liver and kidneys were failing. we had no choice but to have him put to sleep. Its been a year since it happened.

I hope your little guy's ok and hope its not something like my woody had.

Re: Anyone recognise the symptoms?

Thank you all for your advice. I'm going to take him back to the vet tomorrow, as he's just turned his nose up at fish, rice, cheese and carrots - all his usual favourites! It's funny because he seems to be himself and from time to time he wags his tail and will even lollop after a stick if thrown, but obviously I'm worried there is something more sinister at work here. I will report back tomorrow.

Re: Anyone recognise the symptoms?

Quick update on Herbert for anyone interested! Vet has taken bloods and should get back to me on Monday, but he (dog not vet!) does have a temperature although no other particular signs of what's wrong. After a bill of £170 he seems to be a little better, whilst I feel a little sicker....breakthrough in the food dept. though as he wolfed down his first plate of solid food in nearly 10 days - well, almost solid - it was a pricey little tin of Hill's Scientific convalescent paste (mmm!) which lead to a bowl of fish and peas, so I think he may be recovering his appetite. Crossing fingers that the lab doesn't uncover anything serious.

Re: Anyone recognise the symptoms?

Bless him. Perhaps his illness just knocked the wind out of his sails and it's just going to take a little longer than expected for him to recover fully. Hope he continues to improve

Re: Anyone recognise the symptoms?

Ah bless him! glad he's eating well now though. Gosh £170! On the other hand, he's not a young chap and getting bloodwork is great, it can pinpoint anything from thyroid issues through to how well his heart and kidneys are for his age! So he's getting a great MOT and fingers crossed he'll pass
