which type of dog do you recommend for mum???

hi guys,
mum has been thinking long and hard about getting a dog as Diz passed away in march this year and misses the companionship. she has been thinking of what it is she is looking for in a dog and hasnt quite found it. we have been looking in the rescue centres in the north west but I think this has just confused her more.....or is it a case of nothing can replace Diz?
mum wants to find a dog thats not too energetic as she wont be able to do long walks, something thats good with other dogs and people and not snappy, and something that doesnt moult too much as she has an alergy to loose dog fur.
Does anyone have any recommendations of certain breed of dogs that we should be looking out for???

any advice on what to stay clear of??

Re: which type of dog do you recommend for mum???

my thoughts exactly but I must remain neutral!!!!
I have two schnauzers and think theyre the perfect family member but mum is squeamish about the ear plucking!!! I said I would do it for her but I cant push her to have a schnauzer, thats her decision.
I would say to anyone looking for a new family member get a schnauzer....theyre perfect!!!!!!

lol i'll try my best i'm fairly new to them myself. They are a toy breed and make great companions. Love walking but don't need to much. You can get different coat types ranging from Powder puffs which have a full coat to true hairless which have no hair on their bodies except their heads, feet etc. I have 3 at the moment 2 pp's and a hhl. Tia the black one is the PP and Billy the puppy is the HHL.

Re: which type of dog do you recommend for mum???

I'm not sure how your Mum feels about height, but have you considered looking at a retired greyhound? They are not too energentic, they only need 2 20 minute walks a day, and they don't bother too much if they don't get that. Having always lived with other dogs, they are usually very good with dogs, I've not had a grumpy one yet with other dogs. I've never known a greyhound to snap, and they have thin fur, and are quite good for people with allergies. My Mum can't cope with most breeds due to her asthma, but she's fine with my greyhounds.

Quote:
Greyhounds come in a variety of colours: black, white, red, blue, fawn, fallow, brindle or any of these colours broken with white.

Males are usually bigger and slightly taller than the females - the typical height of a dog measured at the shoulder is between 28"-30", bitches are around 27"-28". They are a pedigree breed and normally stay fit and healthy into their teens.

In terms of temperament, there is little to choose from between the genders. The breed is typically intelligent, gentle, affectionate and even-tempered. They are quite laid back and docile, yet despite possessing remarkable stamina and endurance need only two twenty minute walks each day. They are often described as 'couch potatoes', requiring less exercise than average dogs. Most greyhounds walk quietly on a lead without pulling.

Because their coats are short and smooth, they don't get too dirty and can come back from muddy walks relatively clean, generally requiring little grooming.

Greyhounds get along with children, the elderly and often live happily with other pets, including cats.
They are gentle giants, and don't take up a lot of room. Let me know if you want any more info
