Re: which type of dog do you recommend for mum???

Yorkie? I got mine as I cant walk very far as I have a bad back and fibromyalgia. My husband can walk him though, and we have a long enclosed garden so he does get exercise. He is fine with our 4 children. He needs brushing though, but doesnt moult. I had a Jack Russell and he was a lovely dog but did need a fair bit of exercise. However, my mum and dad (aged 76 and 84) dog sit for a Jack Russell and they get on fine with him. His owner is elderly too. They do tend to put white hairs EVERYWHERE though, drive you mad, and can be a bit snappy.

What about a lovely Cavalier. Jack russells can be very lively and demanding, My gran has two of them and the eldest is very calm and the 3 year old is very lively and yappy I walk my cavie for 20mins a day and then a nice long walk twice on the weekend. Hes lovely with other dogs, and doesn't malt at all. Hes very much a lap dog and loves his cuddles. Also a greyhound would be good, but they are quite big. I work at a retired greyhound rehoming centre and they can be very excited when people visit, but most of the time they just lay in there bed and snooze.
Whatever you choose, make sure its the perfect choice.
Good luck.

Re: which type of dog do you recommend for mum???

We have a 7 month old shih tzu - admittedly he's got a lot of stamina and drive to be outside to rough and tumble with other dogs but I'm sure an older shih tzu would be past that.

He's just moulded to fit our lifestyle - my mum has taken him out for long periods of time from a young pup so his energy level matches that. It's completely different in the house, he'll have his mad 5 minutes to entertain himself but he's otherwise a VERY chilled pup indoors.

He's also an absolute ragdoll, he'll let you do anything to him, rarely barks and doesn't irritate allergies (my dad has extremely bad asthma and doesn't have a problem with Oscar). He does need a fair bit of grooming I guess, but a groomer comes to our house every 6-8 weeks or so to tidy him up and all he needs is a brush through his fur a few times a week and a bath in between.

Re: which type of dog do you recommend for mum???

west highland terriers are a pretty calm breed. my mom has one and he`s the most gentle dog ever and doesn`t molt, doesn`t actually require much walking either even though my grampa insists on takin him for loads. he gets on really well with other dogs and everyone he meets (except my uncle) the only thing he doesn`t like is cats
