Doggie DNA tests...

I never realised you could have these, I saw on TV today a mixed breed dog that had a DNA test and they discovered all of the breeds that were in him.
Has anyone heard of this or had any experience?
Bella was abandoned with her litter mates so I haven't a clue what breed mixes she is, but as most 'mutt' owners would understand I am always wondering what breeds she is made up of, it would certainly be very interesting...

I don't believe it is reliable.

Re: Doggie DNA tests...

in the UK there is no db that can do what you describe...
however in the US there is a company that has put together a massive db...but the result are still very "tentatively": they give % of breed with a way to large "confidence interval" to be reliable (unless the tested subject is a cross of recorded bloodlines...)

Re: Doggie DNA tests...

My sister has had the dna taken from her 2 staffies, she did it just in case they were ever stolen and I believe that it's the only sure fire way to prove that the dogs are yours.

Re: Doggie DNA tests...

What Breed Is My Dog

We had this test done on our Wookie:

Baby:

Adult:

His results came back 3-4 weeks after the swabs were sent, apparently he is around 90% pomeranian, 10% english setter.

(if you want to prove your dog is yours, then microchip him/her and also make sure you keep their KC papers safe!)

That's why I am enquiring, as Bella gets older I see all kinds of different breeds in her and would love to have an idea of what she came from...at the moment she is Labrador, collie, gsd, whippet, terrier....lol, that covers most bases!

Re: Doggie DNA tests...

Sadie is DNAd.
If anyone took her out of the country or stolen her we could prove she was our dog, Rocco is yet to be done.

My sister has done this but the only way in a court of law to prove a dog belongs to you is with a dna test, micro chipping and having the KC papers doesn't prove ownership.
