Angry Smacking puppies

My father in law popped over last night and the 1st thing he asked was where was my rug that was in the living room. I explained I had taken it up coz storm was chewing it every 2 minutes, he's stop when I said no and I would distract him with a toy but he kept going back to chewing it. He loves the rug so I moved it and storm looked quite put out
My F in L then said I should have smacked Storm and that would of taught him a lesson eek:
I said no way would I ever smack Storm as he wouldnt understand why I was hitting him and my F in L said I was wrong and smacking him was the only way he'd learn eek:
I said that NO ONE was allowed to lay a finger on Storm, I was so mad, I know hes old school (he's 76) but really, I thought I'd educated him a bit when we had Toby.
He also freaks out if storm has an "accident" and says we should rub his nose in it and tells Storm off despite me keep saying ignore the accidents and praise him when he goes outside
Btw put the rug back tonight and fingers crossed Storms left it alone

Re: Smacking puppies

i am 22 and live with my partner and a friend stays with us when i got Bobby (beagle) and he messed anywhere other than his paper my friend who is 23 said i should have rubbed his nose in it i nearly died i have hardwood flooring so 2 secs and it is clean, but the worst thing is the amount of people i work with that have dogs say smack him when he does wrong (never done) i only reward him for good behavior, hard but ignore when he is doing wrong.

edited to add this part:
sorry forgot most of them say smack him on the nose that will teach him that makes me really angry i ended up going nuts and asking someone how would you like it if i smacked you on the nose and it was damaged and you couldn't smell anymore well thats what you can do to a poor defenseless dog.

Re: Smacking puppies

I know quite a few people who think this way and one even tried to 'discipline' Sky when she was a pup.

They were lucky they went away with their body intact

Touch my dogs I'll break your face.

Re: Smacking puppies

Gah I'd be mad to

I know I dont have a dog yet but I've had disagreements with people about my cats. I showed up to work one day and a coworker asked me what happened to my hand (bloody scratches all over it) I said Horris latched on to it and wouldnt let go. She said she kick him out the door or that I should get rid of him.

I had one lady hint at to me I was gonna abondon my cats on the side of the road because I'm moving in with my boyfriend.

And my boyfriends parents think I molly coddle my cats by buying the best food for them, when they buy the cheapest and one of their cats cant fit thro the bloody cat door

Re: Smacking puppies

the really annoying thing is storm is only 9 weeks old and only been with us 2 weeks and hes doing so well. He knows sit, down and gently and is doing really well with lead training and 9 times out of 10 he will ask to go out when he needs the toilet, all achieved with praising good behaviour and ignoring accidents and saying no firmly when he does something naughty, Im so proud of him

Re: Smacking puppies

well Bobby is 17 weeks and has only just mastered the art of holding his poo in over night and sometimes he will still have the odd accident at times but he is getting there and thats what counts

Re: Smacking puppies

i must admit that i did smack my childhood dog because i was only a kid and was told by the breeder that i was supposed to do it!! of course i never really abused the dog, i loved her as much as my life but i will never smack a dog again. it does make me feel terrible thinking back and wish i had known better and someone else wiser could have taught me.

I wouldn't/don't blame you for smacking your childhood dog because no-one had told you you where doing wrong and the person that is there to help/advise on how to treat the dog told you that it was ok to smack it, at least you grew up and learned that it was the wrong thing to do.

Re: Smacking puppies

I dont think smacking cats or dogs will teach them. Is not fair for them and gosh teh regrets you have after. I know because in my childhood I did it couple times and now looking back I wished to smack my self rather then them .

My suggestion , get one of that small bottles of water you use for ironing for squirting cloths and just apply one quick shoot over his nose (this advice is the most extreme method I would suggest in case he dose not learn at all ) and say No .

somebody else was suggesting clean up and ignore the pupy for a while to get teh message he has done wrong by chewing the rug or any other households goods.

HE is young and he will learn but they are children . You guessed right.

My cat is 3 and a bit and he knows very well how to use the cat litter and yet when he feels in the mood he uses the curtains as cat litter . Gosh I was angry , but then I thought if I use baby pampers to punish him for the fun he had I might get him scared enough to make him understand what he dose is wrong .Little did I knew HE will not get the message , In fact I think he likes it coz he has his bump warm at all times. So now I buy every 2-3 weeks size 4 pampers and we change the little mischievous, mental, mummy's boy 2-3 times a day . Oh Yeah he got used with baths to (I need to wash the back end daily as he can get irritated and the smell of the poo dose not help anyone ) I know I will have to prove with some pics , I need to get them out the phone and will prove that
