He loves the rug so I moved it and storm looked quite put out
My F in L then said I should have smacked Storm and that would of taught him a lesson eek:
I said no way would I ever smack Storm as he wouldnt understand why I was hitting him and my F in L said I was wrong and smacking him was the only way he'd learn eek:
I said that NO ONE was allowed to lay a finger on Storm, I was so mad, I know hes old school (he's 76) but really, I thought I'd educated him a bit when we had Toby.
He also freaks out if storm has an "accident" and says we should rub his nose in it and tells Storm off despite me keep saying ignore the accidents and praise him when he goes outside
Btw put the rug back tonight and fingers crossed Storms left it alone
That's the old way of doing things with puppies and it might be hard to educate your father in law at that age that it's not the done thing anymore. I think it's awful when somebody rubs their dogs nose in their mess, wonder if they would like that done to them?

Re: Smacking puppies

I was horrified yesterday when my friend told me he was angry at his 9 months old because she still peed when they first let her out of her crate!! He was shocked when I said you should never ever ever shout or god forbid punish her for doing this. She is excited to see you and cannot help it, the more you punish the longer she will be doing it as the element of fear will set in.

I had witnessed it once and told them before they pay any attention to her to let her in the garden to relieve herself and never tower over her when they first come home, but they obviously didnt listen.

There is such basic dog psychology we should all know to prevent such hardship during training, I am shocked so many people are so behind with their methods!

sorry forgot most of them say smack him on the nose that will teach him that makes me really angry i ended up going nuts and asking someone how would you like it if i smacked you on the nose and it was damaged and you couldn't smell anymore well thats what you can do to a poor defenseless dog.
how is the toilet training now?
get my beagle pup on 21st nov so any tips would be gratefully recieved!!

Re: Smacking puppies

They always say that dogs live in the moment, so smacking them would only make them think that whatever they were doing at that point in time was wrong, not the past event. As for rubbing their face in it ewwww I can't see what that teaches tbh. think training has come a long way since these methods but it's not widely publicised yet which is unfortunate.

Re: Smacking puppies

Kind methods for training a dog is a very recent thing.
Please don't get angry at people over 40 for their attitude, force was the recommended method back then.
Smile sweetly and tell them your way, hopefully this will make them feel guilty about all the things they have done to dogs over the years.
It should be their guilt though, not yours to dish out, because times have changed, it's not their fault

Re: Smacking puppies

My uncle came over to mine not long after I adopted Maddy. She had previously been starved, and when she first came home had to be taught not to steal. He smacked her quite hard when she stole, I flipped out at him and told him he wasn't allowed back in my house again.

I have since forgiven him. However she is MY dog and its MY place to discipline her in the way I want. I'm pleased to say, I've not smacked her once and she no longer steals.

Old school I think don't think anything of smacking dogs.

Re: Smacking puppies

This brought some memories....

Dont forget it used to be part of the british culture to beat children....whats that saying ''spare the rod. spoil the child'.. it was acceptable, onyl as we learn more about our pyschology, do we realise this is 'can' be damaging....and does not 'always' work..

I can remember when an animal soiled, we were told to rub his/her nose in it, it was a standard practice to many, and done under the understanding it was 'working'...not done out of malice.

Not good i know, and i agree the thought of some laying hands on my human baby, who is now 19 !! and my two fur babies, makes my blood boil.
