* Engl.Ch. Beauella Radzinski
BIS Parent Clubshow 2008 * - courtesy of CC, post #61

thanks for that -
i was not aware that he was a parent-club BIS, i thought it was the Crufts BIS.
not being in the UK, we get this only in bits, and it can be confusing!

Re: Pedigree dogs

Terry: it's not splitting hairs.... really
Crufts is like Westminster.........
you really can't compare BIS at Westminster to a BIS at a club show

Have you seen PDE? Has it been shown in the US yet? I'm sure it must be online somewhere if not..?

Re: Pedigree dogs

# 69, jackblue -

More genetics!

specific to Weims:
just a heads-up, Weims are virtually synonymous with sep-anx; that genetic bottleneck behind WWs I + II left them extremely prone to anxiety, and U need to build the pups ability to cope when solo. Sep-anx is a real bear, once fully developed, and dogs do awful things to themselves in their distress.

* be sure to teach him the crate as a Good Thing,

* do not have the pup share the bed -
crated in the bedroom within arms-reach of the bed is fine; he can move further away or out of the bedroom after he has gotten some emotional self-confidence,

* and be SURE not to make a huge fuss of arrivals (returning home) or departures!

making a big black-vs-white high contrast of Ppl are home, all is joy,
Vs woe is me, i;m all alo-o-o-ne! wooooh.... Will really create sep-anx in a hurry.

returns should be calm and low-key, leaving the pup in the crate for a few moments while U hang up the coat, put the frozen groceries away, etc. THEN... when the initial excitement has faded, let the pup out of the crate, greet him calmly, take him outside (carry him if he is under 14-WO to prevent leaks), and take him outside.
after he has peed and sniffed a bit, then call him over + fuss a little.

DAP pump-spray can be a great comfort to a new pup - it is the synthetic version of a lactating bitchs pheromone, and has a biological reflex of relaxation (to nurse - the BP drops, cortisol falls, pulse + respiration rate slow, etc).
DAP goes on surfaces, not on the dog / pup - collar (off the dog - the sudden spray is startling, and the 99.99% alcohol tastes terrible and stings mucus membranes), the leash a hands-length from the clip, Ur pantslegs at the outside seam, his bed, the car rear seat, etc.
one spritz is a dose, it lasts about 90-mins.

congratulations on the new puppy! :--)

Wink Re: Pedigree dogs

re post #72

hey, sue! :--)

>> i << did not say it was splitting hairs, LOL - someone else did!
yes, i know that a breed-special event is not an all-breed national, (giggle).
i have not shown myself many times, but i do have some of the basics - a Group Win at Westminster KC in NYC is not Wests BIS, but it is lustrous, nonetheless.

i Did see the program, but that was... a year ago? help me here -
anyway, quite some time back, and i am recalling from my own memory something only seen once, (grin). i am not yet having senior moments, but recalling details of a one-hour special this many ? months? down the road, i am BOUND to get some of it wrong, i think --- despite my very best intentions! ;--)

imperfect but willing,

Re: Pedigree dogs

Well Terry it's not been repeated on TV here since so we are all mostly operating out of memory... unless it was recorded (or sent off for, it is available on DVD).

Happy you recognise the difference. That warms the cockles of my heart, cos my show cat once got BIS at a breed club show, and that was like winning the lottery - but nothing compared to getting a place at our cat-equivalent of Westminster or Crufts, he didn't.

Re: Pedigree dogs

congratulations on the BIS kitty!
what breed?

we never showed our Siamese, i showed my first dog in obedience and my Akita in conformation. we had a blast! :--)

BTW, there is nothing like a set of warm cockles on a chilly autumn evening, LOL, unless it is a cuppa goo-ood hot chocolate on a winter night, with the stars as sharp as diamonds and a snap in the air! ;--)
cheers,
