Pet Insurance

Hi everyone

I would like to introduce myself.I'm John and I've just moved down to Exeter,Devon with my family - and Angus,my 2 year crossbreed.

I thought things would be a bit easier as far as exercise is concerned. But Exeter seems to be the same as most major towns - the traffic is very busy. There is one park near me but it isn't all that big and I'm worried about Angus running into the road and getting injured.

Frankly, I'm quite worried for Angus as I moved away thinking this problem would not arise, but I just couldn't afford to have very heavy vet's bills, and I'm thinking about insurance for Angus. Has anyone any experience of this kind of insurance - and could you recommend a company where I can get a reasonable rate?
Thank you for your help. Regards from John & Angus.

Re: Pet Insurance

I'm with pet plan, they are quite resonable, unforuntaly with a surrey postcode for us any insursance premiums are high!!!

The main thing is to check excallty what you are covered for, we are covered until the money runs out on a particular illness/ injury not just for that illness for one year. Some of the cheaper ones don't do that.
Also make sure it has good libailty insurance and missing pet cover (just in case!!!)

p.s. hope your all ok down in exeter after the bombing!!!

Re: Pet Insurance

We have both our dogs insured with healthy pets. they are quite reasonable, and as mentioned above some companies only cover some ilnesses for a specified period whereas healthy pets cover ongoing problems. our dog at my parents is getting really old now and the past few years he has had a lot of ongoing problems with legs and things, so its reassuring to have.

Re: Pet Insurance

Our dog is with Petplan, we pay £32 per month (I think it varies between breeds and areas?). We've never had to make a claim but I know quite a few people who have claimed for their own pets and everyone seems to say Petplan are the ones who pay out the quickest. It's worthwhile reading the fine print to ensure that you get a policy that covers illness for life rather than for a set maximum amount.

Re: Pet Insurance

I had Milo (cross breed) insured with Halifax, it cost me £9 a month and when we claimed they paid out quickly. I have now got all the dogs and cats insured on one policy with Healthy Pets for £28 a month on the advice of members from this forum.

Re: Pet Insurance

We have our girls insured with Sainsburys. They have a good reputation and provide similar cover to Petplan, but it isn't as expensive.

Sorry to state the obvious, but don't you think your money might be more wisely spent on training classes to improve Angus' recall?

Re: Pet Insurance

Hi everyone

Thanks very much for your amazing response.I must say Angus looked most disappointed when I said I might have to do a bit of training!!

But I get out very early in the morning to give him a little run off the lead -although I know I shouldn't but he's such a lively little chap!

Chelle and AJShep1984 both suggested Healthy Pets, and I've been online getting quotes from all the companies you suggested - and Healthy Pets comes out as the lowest. A friend I was having a chat with earlier suggested I get in touch with another company called Petguard. So I also got a quote from them.

I'm always worried to take the lowest quote in case it doesn't work out and I was wondering if anyone had heard of Petguard, or used them?

By the way, Sainsbury's who is about the third up in the quote, offers up to £2,500 vets fees - and I'm really not sure if the £1000 is enough cover these days.

Once again, thanks very much for all your kind help and advice. One last thing, Angus has never had to see the vet, except of course for the usual routine things.
Best regards. John

Re: Pet Insurance

Hi
I use Tesco at the moment, cant remember the specifics but i know we have a very comparable policy with all the extras .. I pay £19 per month with them.
I am pleased to say i have never had to claim on pet insurance however i have my home insurance with them and they were brilliant - cant recommend the service enough - this is why i ended up getting pet with them as well as every other insurance policy i have!!
