Re: Border Collie Pups

if possible get a puppy who has been brought up in the home. my border collie came from a farm and was reared in a barn so wasnt socialised. she was a very nervous puppy and it has taken a lot of training to get her to accept strangers.
have you had a border collie before? they are very highly strung and take a lot of training. they are lovely pets if probably trained.

Unhappy Re: Border Collie Pups

Just a tip - as with any other dogs, check carefully to ensure there are no inherited diseases in the bloodline. My last border collie developed severe epilepsy which the vet was unable to control, and we had to have her put down at 3 years old, which was really heartbreaking. My vet says this is more and more common in collies, as it often doesn't start until they are between 18 months to 3 years old, by which time they may have already been bred and passed on the faulty gene. :

Re: Border Collie Pups

Carrie, have you first researched this breed and do you work?

I strongly recommend that you do NOT choose a Bordie Collie unless you will be with them for most of the day. Collies are extremely intelligent with a desperate desire to work. Without stimulation they quickly become bored and this can lead to behavioural problems such as separation anxiety.

Their herding instinct can also lead them to be a little snappy with strangers and children and they are known escape artists.

However, in the right hands, they make wonderful pets. They are loyal companions, but health wise they have a high risk of hip problems. As in a previous post, they are prone to epilepsy.

I should certainly ask around training centres, and veterinary surgery's for recommendations as to the best breeders, and of course the Pets for Homes own website.

Re: Border Collie Pups

I agree with Nina, they are a high maintainance dog. I really love them, the way they look, the way they move and their high intellegence and desire to work. My husband and myself both compete with collies, so these are very desirable behaviours, but as has already been mentioned can be a nightmare in a pet dog.
