Researching and learning

Hi guys.

Well, I'm new on the forum and have already met some lovely, helpful people and read a lot of helpful entries.

As I've said before, I'm hoping to get a puppy and would ideally like to get an Alaskan Klee Kai.

Archielee has been an absolute star and has answered many of my questions and I would still ideally like a Klee Kai but to be fair to the puppy, I want to make sure I'm looking for the right kind of puppy.

We would like a small/medium size dog who is quite high energy and friendly. We do live in an apartment in London but live close to a park and are more than willing to put in the effort to walk it and play with it and make sure it has all the exercise it needs.

The puppy would rarely be left alone and would get a lot of love and attention.

Can people please give me their opinions on what dog breed would be ideal for us and the experiences they've had?

Thank you in advance =)

Re: Researching and learning

Is this going to be your first dog?

How much time for walks are you willing to give it?

Do you have places to let the dog off lead?

I have a cocker spaniel, which is medium energy, and we live in london. We take him to the park every day, and he has 1 hour in the morning (30 mins of that off lead) and then 1 hour in the afternoon. He's fine with this, and we do agility as well. He's friendly with dogs and children, and is a small-medium sized dog.

Re: Researching and learning

I think we'll be able to take it out at least twice a day, half an hour to an hour in the morning and evening and my partner should be able and willing to take it out for half an hour during the day.

I need to do more research on off leash areas but I know that at least twice a week we'll be going down to Blackheath or my parents house (with a big garden) so they'll be able to run around and play quite freely.

We have considered a Corgi but we're concerned about how short their legs are as we would like it to have the freedom to jump up on the sofa with us and jump off when it's bored etc.

I love them but my boyfriend doesn't. His friend had 3 and whenever they got nervous or excited they peed and it left him with a bad experience so unfortunately, they're not an option.

Shetland Sheepdogs are small to medium and have a decent amount of energy.

They are also well noted for being able to live in appartments - we've had ours in a first-floor flat since February and she's never short of exercise or green space. If you make the effort they will be more than happy.

They are also great off the lead with the right obedience training.

Re: Researching and learning

I don't know much about Shetland Sheep dogs. My boyfriend had a Collie when he was younger and in my mind (I might be REALLY wrong about this) they're miniture versions of them.

I don't know anything about their temperament etc

(I think I'm easier to please than my boyfriend.)

Re: Researching and learning

Are they easy to train?

I don't know why but my boyfriend s hesitant about them.

The only breeds we've agreed on so far are AKKs and Japanese Spitz. He really wants a Bulldog but we think it would need more space (seeing as they're generally quite clumsy)

Re: Researching and learning

Pomeranians wouldn't be good for you as they can easily break their legs by just jumping off a couch.

I too would suggest a Collie (as in rough collie) or Sheltie, which is in looks and part of the personality a miniature collie.

They are very intelligent, loyal and agile. They love running and playing, catching bubbles and whatnot

I have not seen many klee kai in the UK, but I do love love the Euraiser. Those dogs are gorgeous!
