kc reg?

what exactly is kc reg?

up until now i have only ever had rescue dogs, but recently bought a white german shepherd pup from a private seller. i dont really know much about dog breeding and all that comes with it- the breeder unfortunately passed away when the pups were born and his son was left with all the dogs but no space or cash to look after them. the parents went to the rspca and he sold the puppies.

i have a pedigree form but he said the puppies wernt kc reg because the dad was but the mom wasnt.

i only want the dog as a pet- i have no intention of breeding whatsoever, we just needed a companion for our border collie.

does this matter? im not even sure what kc reg means lol

Re: kc reg?

It basically means the dog/pup is registered with the kennel club.

The Kennel Club

Is this really the case? As I know white Boxers cannot be shown (apart from in obedience) but they can be and are still Kennel Club registered.

Taken from the GSDhelpline
Quote:
In this country there is no problem registering White GSD's with the Kennel Club, but the breed standard describes the colour white as "highly undesirable"
Kennel Club papers are not that important if you just intend to have a pet dog, only the breeder can Kennel Club register puppies and as he's passed away now it would be impossible to get the pup registered, and being as the Sire or Dam were not registered even if the breeder were still alive it's something that couldn't be done anyway without 'true' history on the Sire and Dam.

Anyway, the papers don't make the dog, just enjoy him

Re: kc reg?

Congratualtions on your new puppy!

The problem with non-KC reg. isn't the not being registered as such, it is more the problems that may come from the type of person who usually breeds non KC registered dogs. Usually they don't really know much about breeding, so the pup might not have been well reared and socialised in suitable conditions, which might make it harder to toilet train or mean the pup is more boisterous as it hasn't learnt as much from Mum. Pup also might not be properly wormed which could potentially cause problems later on, and if the parents aren't health checked (Hips, eyes etc) then that might also not bode well for the future health of your pup. In the case of a GSD, I'd probably say maybe be cautious where the hips are concerned and be extra careful with exercise until a year old.

Re: kc reg?

thankyou

we had a rescue gsd pup when i was a little girl, so we know to be careful with exercise and make sure he doesnt put weight on too quickly while he is still growing.

the pup is only 9 weeks old and he is being housetrained as we speak (hes slowwwwwly getting the idea!) and he has been wormed up to date. he has been checked over at the vets and we are going to speak to him on our final vaccination/microchipping visit about the signs to look out for for hip problems and i have no problem with spending 5 years on beans on toast if he needs a hip replacement at some point

as far as we can tell from the pedigree list and what the late breeders son could tell us, it is only the mother that was not registered- her parents and the registered fathers parents and a list of about 5 generations back come with kc reg, so im hoping its fine.
unfortunately as the seller didnt know much about the dogs and was just left with them when his father died- he is unable to tell us about the parents hip scores is the only downfall.

Our rescue gsd was born with calcium deficiency and was booked in to be put to sleep when my mom fell in love with him at the dogs home (an 8week old ball of fluff who couldnt stand cos his legs were weak!), and they thought he would have major hip problems and a short life cos he was the runt of the litter.
hes kinda small for a gsd, but has outlived all his 'healthy' siblings (a neighbour of ours had some) and has only recently had problems with his legs (he's almost 17!!!)
