What breed do you think any novice owner should avoid and why??

I think any 'larger' dogs should be avoided, many may disagree but I do think that if you haven't had experience it should be avoided! Newfies etc x

Re: Breeds For Novice Owners To Avoid!

Breeds to avoid "awwww such a cute puppy! What breed? oooh i've not heard of those, I'll have it!"

As I said in another Thread, If you do ur research thoroughly and are completely prepared then no breed is really unsuitable, although I wouldn't advise a 70 yr old to get a Mastiff! LOL

As long as common sense is involved in the purchase of a pup/dog then I will coo and purr over ur puppy pictures!

I'd be one of those who disagree.

Small dog does not equal easy dog.

I'd advise first-time owners against working line dogs (of whatever breed).

Well I would say German Shepherds because they definitely aren't for novices in my opinion. They can be very hard work when they are puppies and need firm handling and training and lots of exercise as they are a very intelligent breed.

Re: Breeds For Novice Owners To Avoid!

Rottweilers, they need to be brought up right & I think there are too many owners who class these beautiful, intelligent & loyal dogs as 'status' dogs- although any dog (pedigree or otherwise) in the wrong hands with someone totally clueless to their needs (& let's face it there are plenty of people like that about!) is a breed to avoid

Re: Breeds For Novice Owners To Avoid!

My first dog was a GSD. She was an absolute dream and one of the easiest dogs I have ever lived with. Virtually trained herself.

My second dog was a GSD and was easy if a little stubborn on occasion.

My third dog was a GSD, poorly bred with a nervous but guardy disposition. Very challenging to own and without the experience I already had at that stage would have been potentially disasterous.

At the end of the day they are all individuals with individual temperaments, personalities and requirements. A first time owner can not do better than to find an assesed adult rescue dog from a foster enviroment.

Re: Breeds For Novice Owners To Avoid!

I would say Collies they need a lot of work put into them (well some) but if you get over that line you will have a fantastic dog but unfortunaly people give up with collies and that why i say you have to do your homework on the breed...

Re: Breeds For Novice Owners To Avoid!

When does someone stop being a novice and start being experienced?

Does owning a Yorkie for 15 years suddenly make someone capable of owning say a Husky?

I think a lot of it comes down to the individual dog, and the character of the owner.
