springer spaniel

i have a spinger spaniel called alfie who is 10 months old. we are worried about him because he never stops he is on the go all the time and is quite thin. we give him slightly more food than is recomended for his weight but but he doesnt seem to put any weight on. i can hear a lot of you saying you dont want him fat and we dont but we dont to see his ribs either.
is his excessive energy normal for a spaniel of this age?
regards
karen

the only way i can decribe him is like a child with adhd.

can anyone help?

Re: springer spaniel

I think that's just a typical springer for you.
What food are you feeding?

Re: springer spaniel

How often is he walked and alowed to free run?

and do you play games with him and train him alot to stimulate him?

also what is he been fed on?

springers are very hyper dogs and go through a teenage phase

Springers are hyper and he is at the age where he will be on the go lol

What food is he on??

They need a lot of stimulation so it could be he is also trying to get your attention

Re: springer spaniel

Yep, they're energetic dogs, whats his feed. If hes on the go all the time you may need to up his feed. The weight given on feed packs is just a guide for average walks etc.

Re: springer spaniel

How old is he? How big is he? How much does he weigh? What are you feeding him? How much outdoor exercise is he getting.?

I have a 8mth old whos 15.5kg and near 21" at the withers and an 11 yr old whos 21.5kg and 18" at the withers. They will eat compulsively and are renound for it, as adults if they dont get enough exercise they will get very fat within weeks, as pups they will just toilet it out as they cant process it all. Ive found mine had good growth and weight gains up until 6 1/2 mths then plateaued but hes still putting weight on just not as dramatically.

I recently bought tripe sticks to put a bit of fat on him and they gave him mild colitus (bad runs). He is fine with pigs ears (try to get as freshly cooked as poss) though unless your vet is worried I wouldnt stress yourself out. Ive just bought a coat for him for the winter (totally against my principles), their coats dont easily repell water and I dont want him catching a bad flu

Re: springer spaniel

A springer always on the go? sounds like you have a normal springer to me. i have had springers 2 at the moment and yes they are/have been full of energy my 9 year old being no different.

All my 3 have been different sizes so dont worry about his weight, a fat 10 month old springer and i would be worried, my youngest has been the skinniest she is 15 months now and is just begginning to fill out mine are fed burns which is known for keeping weight off but she is very small framed anyway. Dont worry he will fill out as he gets older the trouble with springers they are never still long enough for the fat to settleD and for me thats good.

Re: springer spaniel

Sounds like a normal springer to me!!! Always on the go, full of energy and if anything like mine - you would think they never get fed!! would eat til they burst if they had the chance!! But mine get their recommended amount and treats during the day.

I was worried about my boy as he looked awful skinny, so i upped his meals, but he never put weight on - hes just full of energy and never stops running! Cant get the weight on him. But the vet said he is fine.

Just check the food - see what the daily amounts are, and if you are feeding it, and he seems ok otherwise, i wouldnt worry.
