After some advice please......we have found a breeder whos pups were born this week. They want a deposit before we view though. Is this common?

No way, I have never heard any good and respectable breeder ask for money before you even view the pups. Give this lot a wide berth!

I agree with Lynsey. Several things should happen before you are asked for a deposit. First of all, you should have been to see the pups and decided that they are strong and healthy. You should have satisfied yourself that the pups have been well-cared for and socialised. You should have seen at least the mother, and preferably the father as well, or some photos and details about the father if he is not owned by the breeders. If the breed is a pedigree, the breeder should have told you about the pedigree history. Even more importantly, the breeders should have been asking you all sorts of questions in order to satisfy themselves that you are a suitable prospective owner for one of their pups. And after all that, if both you and the breeder decide that buying a pup is right for you, THAT is when you should be asked for a deposit.

It sounds as though these breeders are not the kind of breeders you would want to buy a pup from - I would find a different breeder if I were you.

you should never be asked to pay a deposit on a puppy you have never even seen yet! please find someone else and go and view the puppies, mum and dad( definately the mum with the puppies) the surroundings of the puppies and only when you are completely satisfied that all is well ( and a good breeder will also vet you!) then pay a deposit to hold your puppy?

I can't understand why someone would want a deposit before you view a litter? Seems a bit odd to me.

The only reason I can see someone wanting a deposit before you view the pups is that they have experienced a lot of time-wasters/photograph hunters - you know the type, turn up, cuddle the pups and have no intentions whatsoever of buying one. As the others have said I wouldnt buy under these circumstances but maybe the reason isnt a sinister one

To me that just seems like a scam, I'm going to guess there aren't even any pups, they'll take your money and you'll never hear from them again.

I would never pay a deposit for anything without seeing it, unless a hoilday and even then I would want pics and reviews!

Maybe if you let us know what breed you after pople on here might be able to recommed some breeders to you
