Question Can dogs smile?

I have a one year old female Staffy, Millie, who is a rescue dog. When I pet her, the corners of her mouth turn up, as if she is smiling. She doesn't show her teeth or open her mouth, it's just like a human smile with the corners of the mouth. More like this; than this;
You can see by the shape of her eyes at the time that she is happy, so is this a smile, or just a natural facial shape? When we first got her she was very timid, but she 'smiled' when we showed her love, something she hadn't been shown much of before.
I searched the internet to try and find out but everything I could find was relating to the dog opening the mouth and panting with a smile-like expression.
Anyone know?

Re: Can dogs smile?

I am sure they do lol ours sort of scrunch up thier nose a little so their eye shut a little and one side of the mouth goes up, will try to catch a pic of them doing it, and they do it in time of me saying wheres my darlings or some such endearment, so I know it is a response to me lol.

Yes they can! My greyhound used to bear her teeth when she was wagging and happy, a big cheesy grin. I realy miss her cheeky smile.

Re: Can dogs smile?

I know what you mean. They dont show their teetch, but the corners of the mouth turn up so it looks like a smile.

Both of my SBT's do this. One more than the other.

Re: Can dogs smile?

Yes Buster does it when he's in the car or just really happy and the Samoyed we had here never stopped smiling of course. SBT's are infamous for their smile.
