Red face Dog turning into cat, help!

Is it possible for a dog to start thinking it's a cat? Our dog Bobbie is a 22 month old german shepherd x wolfhound, every thing was fine, he behaved pretty well, we went to basic training and he loves his walks. But recently my son and his girlfriend moved back in with us plus thier 6 month old kitten. At first the dog despised the cat and vice versa, in the end we just let them get on with it and now they seem to tolerate each other which is good but now Bobbie has started to get on the furniture which he never used to do, and the other day we discovered him standing on the dining table(if you can imagine shepherd size) i'm sure its because he's seen the cat do it and the cat doesn't get punnished so i don't really want to start getting angry at the dog as this doesn't seem fair on him.I'm sure one day i'm going to find him trying to reverse his bum into the cat litter tray. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

HAHA!! The age old cat vs. dog situation. Or house was always full of both, and I'm sure the cat looked smug(er) when the dog was shoe'd off the sofa.

Re: Dog turning into cat, help!

Our cat thought he was a dog.......when you called him he'd wag his tail and talk to you!!! He had to sleep in the dogs bed and shared the dogs dinner out same bowl. Luckily as the dog grew she was use to the cats ways and it wasnt a problem

Re: Dog turning into cat, help!

I guess the dog could be confuesd with the diffeence of boundaries for the cat and himself??

In my opinion, of you aren't going to let the dog on the sofa, because of hair maybe, then the cat should not be alowed either. Also I never let my cats on the table/worktops, because it is so unhygeninc! Eww.
But yeah, the dog will see the cat there and not get told off, so he will think its okay to be up there. My dogs actually bark at the cats if they go on the table.

You need to re-inforce the rules to the dog, do a bit more training so he understands his boundaries.

Re: Dog turning into cat, help!

what makes it worse for the poor dog is that he's not allowed upstairs,we have a dog gate, but we cant stop the cat and he comes down with me in the mornings, and bobbie looks at me as if he's been dumped and i feel i have to spend twice as long on the old belly rub just to prove otherwise.

If he starts climbing trees, you should take advice from a behaviourist

Re: Dog turning into cat, help!

My Vizsla is convinced he's a cat half the time and he's never met one!
Instead of playing fetch like a "normal" dog he will stalk up to his toys then pounce on them and he'll try to climb anything including the outside of the house (hence the sig!) oh and he can't possibly go to sleep in the evenings unless he's on someone's lap!

Re: Dog turning into cat, help!

Bobbie does the stalking thing when he meets other dogs on a walk off lead , he'll virtually go down on his belly looking like a big cat and then with about 20 feet to go he'll spring forward and go into dappy play mode. Perhaps he's the dog equivelent of human transgender, where he's a cat born in a dogs body??? Where do i sign for the TV rights lol.
