Castration

Hello all,

Barney was castrated on Wednesday and was a little sleepy when we picked him up at 3pm, but within 3 hours he was back to his normal self.

The vet nurse said to keep him quiet and not let him jump on the bed and run up the stairs etc, but we have tried but with no avail.

We are going to take him for a walk tomorrow on his lead. When can he be let off his lead again, do i have to wait until the stitches have gone?

I would agree with this completely! If he is anything like my boy, he could be running in and out of hedges and they could catch him on his stitches. I didnt even let mine run through long grass when he got done!! Stuck to lead walks only just to be safe. But he'l be back to normal in no time!

Hiya

My Charlie was castrated today - he is very unhappy about the whole thing!! Did your Barney need to have a lampshade collar - its frightening Charlie but I need to keep it on him for the moment!!

We got a set of instructions from the vets and it says to only lead walk for 7 days.

I think we are in for a long night with little Charlie but best of luck with Barney!!

No he didn't have a lampshade collar, he has been pretty good at not licking the wound, if we see him doing it we just tell him no and he stops.

We will keep to lead walking for now then.

If the lampshade distresses him you could try shorts or boxers, ideally men`s with a fly so they can be put on the `wrong way round` as it were with the fly open for his tail, and a comfortable but firm elasticated waist, if he tries to lick he will just get the fabric rather than himself directly, alternatively there is a different type of collar which prevents a dog getting to the area but without encompassing the head

Comfy Collar - Alternative Buster, elizabethan neck collar for dogs and cats

Re: Castration

That comfy collar looks far more suitable!! I wish I'd got one of those it would have been much less distressing for our charlie.

Thanks for that Patch, we have tried a pair of my stepsons pants on Charlie but he didn't much like that either - we've gone back to the lampshade for the moment!

Is Barney going nuts not being properly walked, thats the next bit I'm worried about - Charlie is quite active and likes a good run around!!

Re: Castration

lol I used the comfy collar on my girl when she had an operation on her tail recently, to be honest it didnt work as well as I expected, I think on animals with short necks it may be fine, but if your dog has a longer neck they can still stretch over the collar and get to what they want, I ended up putting the buster collar back on.
