moving house - got me thinking!

Me and my fella are thinking of moving house in the next year or so and it got me thinking. people usually think about location, type of house and the number of rooms. My first thought was the new house must have a room for the dogs
At the moment my boys have quite a large utility room which houses both there beds (even though they both sleep together in either one of them) and god knows how many of there toys. they only sleep in the room so only spend the night in there, during the day they are with us in the house or out in the garden or on walks (it must be such a hard life for them ). anyways, i was just thinking, did anyone else base the choice of new home on where there dogs would sleep??

Re: moving house - got me thinking!

Unfortunately, I didn't have a choice as I was homeless and penniless at the time.
The most important room that I wanted for my dogs was a garden, and I was lucky enough to find a lovely 1 bedroomed flat with a good sized garden. Had to borrow the deposit from someone else and have struggled to pay this back, but it was well worth it for mine and my dogs sanity

No, not the dog's needs specifically (she's a little yorkie who could just about sleep in a shoebox) but we've always made the decision about where to live based on the cats' needs, away from traffic being the main one of course. We've actually lost quite a lot of money over the years and had awful trouble selling our various homes because of lack of parking down cul de sacs etc but our cats have lived to a ripe old age so it was worth it. My present home is the exception, it was bought when there were no cats to live in it but I have acquired three strays who just turned up, so I do worry about the road a bit now, though luckily it's fairly quiet here. We have always picked the biggest garden we could afford too, at the expense of house quality, for the cats' benefit. We have also been swayed by next door houses being overgrown jungles, on the basis that the cats could have fun and the owners would not be obsessive gardeners (not a good thing in next door neighbours when you have cats). Dogs are different, of course and usually don't wind neighbours up as much.

Re: moving house - got me thinking!

I looked for the garden first too, as long as my dogs can get out into the garden and be in the sun in summer to laze around, and then the bedroom then location, etc. xxxx

Glad things worked out for you and you dogs and you are all happy It seems quite silly to other people that you would decide where you would buy a house based on your dogs needs but I suppose when your in a position where your dog is all you have its not so quite obsurd. Well done you for sticking by your dogs in what i can only imagine was such a difficult situation.

Re: moving house - got me thinking!

When me and my oh buy a house in the next year or so, I will be making sure the house has a big garden, and a space for the dogs to sleep. I prefer their crates to be in another room than the living room.

Re: moving house - got me thinking!

My most important thing when i moved to Wales was a place with a good garden for the dogs and not too many neighbours.I knew i would foster for my friend who runs an animal sanctuary.Didnt realise how many times i would fail though. Got an acre of land 1 close nieghbour who is brilliant and tells me not to worry about the noise and dogs bark. The house was terrible and needed renovating and i lived in a caravan for six months but it was worth it.

Re: moving house - got me thinking!

lol I want to move because I have dogs lol if I didnt I would be quite happy in this house, its big enough with a fair size garden, but having 5 malamutes, I want to buy somewhere that has some land with it so that I can fence it off and the dogs will have a large area to let off steam lol. I also want to have no neighbours, when I live my neighbours are fantastic, but that cannot be guaranteed if I move so would prefer not to have them just in case.

Re: moving house - got me thinking!

Our house at the moment is pretty good for bramble (excpet we don't own it!) next time we move I don't want open plan living because he ruins riot downstairs when we are out, I want a actual door separating the kitchen and the living room so he can have one room and the garden.

That's interesting. I've always longed for a through lounge but I suppose you're right that open plan living (specially an open plan kitchen) does have its drawbacks. The dog used to be terrible for leaping through the catflap in her younger, fitter days and open plan would have made this even more of a hassle.
