I saw the show a few times and saw it being used- certainly does seem to be effective 4m what I saw.
The only thing about dog borstal that I don't like so much is the way that they sometimes let some owners really shout at the dogs (unnecessary) and I think that there is alot of onscreen swearing just for the cameras.

You do need to be carefull with using the rattle bottle though, if the dog is at all timid you could really upset it and cause the opersite affect, its the same as using pet corrector spray.

As far as trainning goes, get yourself down to a puppy/ dog trainning class, if anything it will at least show you that there are other people out there having problems with there dogs as well.

it is very effective, ive used it many times and is used by most professionals to sort out alot of unwanted behaviours!

i think its a great training aid, doesnt cost anything to make either. just an old bottle with the lid on, with what ever you can find that makes a noise inside to make it rattle! very simple!

Re: New Dog Owner

You are 100% right Gemma - on a nervous dog a rattle bottle can cause untold psychological damage. On dog borstal they ALWAYS tell you to get professional help and not try the methods on your own - this is purely because your dog needs assessing first to see which training techniques will suit it best.

I've only just read the thread and I was thinking the same, you don't use a rattle with a nervous dog, it's going to make things worse if anything.

Re: New Dog Owner

I'm feeling much better about the dog now. I guess I was just having a funny 5 minutes or something. He is the biggest animal we've ever had and other stuff.

His old owner has told my brother not to feed or walk sunny for the next week or so because the owner who abused him and kicked him down the stairs was about his age and height.

I think sunny also sees my mum as the "pack leader" because he follows her about the house the majority of the time.

I'm looking about for a trainning class and I am introducing him to people slowly. He gets on great with my friend darryl who he met yesterday.
