Talking Re: New Dog Owner

yeah that would be good for him.

1) have your friend wait in the garden with some treats
2) tell your friend not to make eye contact with sunny, dont touch him and stay still, calm and tell him not to move away from sunny
3) bring sunny out in the garden on his lead
4) let sunny walk over to your friend, you follow keeping him on the lead
5) let sunny sniff your frind who is standing still
6) once sunny is confortable with him, he will try to be petted, he may sit, rub himself on him and possibly give his paw. if he doesnt do these thing then he will try to get some attention from your friend, doesnt matter to sunny what it is
7) your friend can than make a fuss of sunny and give him the treats, BUT only when sunny is comfortable

by doing this many times with different men, he will think that he will get treats from them and will become more comfortable round them

Re: New Dog Owner

Hope the age is not a problem.

Another question though. How do I know how he's feeling? Happy, sad, angry etc. (with out looking at his tail waggaling)?

Sometimes I look at him and I think he looks upset, and I don't want him to be.

Re: New Dog Owner

OK, I've just taken him for a walk for about 30 minutes. I went to my friends house, I told him not to stare at him in the eyes but he stared at him in the eyes. I'm really pissed at him now because sunny got angry and upset and started barking.

I pulled sunny away but my friends mum said "Oh no, what you do is you don't pull him back because you make him more aggressive".

That's not true right? Sunny is a nervous dog, and we've been told by his previous owner at the blue cross who looked after him night and day that you have to take him out of the situation.

I started to take him home and he barked at a few people. Yet when we walked back, he sometimes whined and backed away a little from me. Have I done something wrong, or has he stepped on some glass or something? He would go on his two front paws completely like he would before, is he injured or is he just over excited and wanted the treats we were offering?

He's starting to listen a bit more now, like stopping at roads and when I say so and sits.

Re: New Dog Owner

I have a collie- a supposedly "hyper" breed, although I don't find that at all. I find that mental stimulation will tire them out far more than just walks. Why not consider joining a local tricks class or doing agilty with him. It will be great for bonding with your dog and really good fun!

Re: New Dog Owner

I am thinking about joinning a trainning class, but i might not as i said he's a very nervous dog.

His paw seems to be OK now, and he's calm now. Still pissed at my so called "friend" though.

age is not a problem by the way, i was just curious!

when sunny is on the leash you can correct his behaviour very easily, dont pull the leash and him back, pull the leash to the side this is a more effective way of correction! you need to be relaxed at all times if he is a little nervous, because if you are tense, sunny will become more nervous! remember calm, assertive energy, keep your head and shoulders high, keep your body relaxed!

How do I know how he's feeling? Happy, sad, angry etc?

take a look at the attached file, this will show you when he is happy, aggressive, feraful, etc!

hope this helps

Re: New Dog Owner

Thank you.

I'm watching the dog whisperer on Sky Three. Ceaser Millan is really smart and picked up a good tip.

Instead of saying "no no no" make a claw shapped hand and make a "pst" sound to correct the dog.
