Re: New Dog Owner

I will definelty try this on our next walk. Can't give him anything like cheese yet though.

He likes to sniff around grass a lot and goes crazy with sticks. :P

yeah save cheese for when he is better. but you can use some of his daily diet though, in place of treats. he wont know the difference.

my pup vegas has had a dicky tummy on and off for 2 weeks, so i know what you mean. ive been using her daily diet in place of treats and she likes scoffing them down. chewing them down like a gannit!

Re: New Dog Owner

So, we just had a BBQ.

He was hovering and i didn't get any food. I made him lay on his blanket and I didn't give him any food. I rewarded him for not doing so.

However, rest of my family gave him food even though I told him not too.

thats good that you didnt give him anything and that he listened to you. good work in progress.

you need to tell your family that they shouldnt give him anything what so ever, especially with his dodgy tummy!

human foods are no good to dogs, some dogs are allergic to some stuff like, wheat, soya, beef and some dogs are also allergic to milk (lactose intollerant)!

if he is going to be successful with the food exercise then nobody should give him anything at all, otherwise he wont learn and everything you are doing will be pointless!

Re: New Dog Owner

I do tell them not to give him anything, because he'll be expecting food off us when we eat next. We didn't give him anything with artifical colouring or flavours though, it was 100% chicken.

Next, the walkies and bottle.

yeah that will be fun.

when you walk him, remember: dont let him out of the door first and dont let him sniff the ground unless you give him the leway!

keep on walking and dont stop if sunny stops to sniff, shake the bottle and tell him to "WALK ON", when he listens fuss him and give him a treat!

your gunna need a bumbag with all these training aids!

ohh yeah and remember to talk to him during the walk, to keep him interested in you, not everything around him.

when you do this everytime you walk him, he will listen to you and look at you almost constantly, while walking onward. this will come in all due time, not straight away, but if you work on it he will not bother sniffing the ground and will look up at you to give him direction, like a pack leader should!

you would proberly benefit from reading up on cesar millan, BE THE PACK LEADER book, you can get it from AMAZON for a great price.
its a great book as well as the first book he wrote, very helpful when trying to get a dog to be 100% balanced and happy!

all the techniques work because i use them most of the time, past and presant!

Re: New Dog Owner

Back from walk, I tried distracting him with a bottle with his treats in to use as a rattle, but no luck even when calling his name.

Only barked at one dog, kept him away from others. He now begins to stop at the side of a road.

It's work in progress.

im glad its going ok for you guys!

did you use the bottle when he barked at the other dog?

you shouldnt use the bottle when calling his name becasue he will learn to associate it with a bad thing, but everything else is fine!

Re: New Dog Owner

I only did it when another dog came by and when he was sniffing at a place for a while and wouldn't respond when I pulled the lead.

He's brilliant in the house when I call him, just outside needs trainning on.
