Re: New Dog Owner

Aww he's lovely!! look at his right ear

It's very VERY rewarding to rescue a dog but they all come with their problems.. learned behaviour from their previous life!! these are the hardest to overcome as they learned them as puppies They can relearn though, even though the same problem will raise its head at times of high excitement or stress.

Re the food. You need to be strong. Don't get taken in by those eyes It's a big fat no no. Does he know the command for lie down? Train him how to lie down with doggy treats, then whilst you eat, ask him to lie down. Be warned, if he doesn't listen the first time, you can't let it go... so you may have to concentrate on him until he does it. He may get up again in a few seconds, so try it again with a Stay! Also, completely ignore him once you are eating apart from the command. What's yours is NOT his... and he'll soon learn very very early days, so you'll have to do this SOOOOO many times

He'll have a very quick and active mind, so giving him a job to do will be fantastic. He'll learn commands very quickly too. Get him to a local obediance class and then see where his talents lie. COuld be agility for example

Good luck. He looks gorgeous and he'll give you many years of fun!!!

Re: New Dog Owner

His name is sunny, he's not really an agressive dog, just really shy and weary of men, but he's used to the men in the house now. He doesn't have any bad habbits from his time as a young pup. He spent 1 year of his life in a blue cross center where everyone looked after him, they all said they were really sad to see him go because he was the best dog they had there.

He's been trainned there and knows commands like sit and follow.

At he moment he's jumping about in the paddaling pool we bought especially for him, calmed him down after barking at the neighbour (as i said, weary of strangers and men).

you dont want his shyness or fear of strangers and men to get out of control, believe me it will if you let it. like i said on your behaviour post, use the rattle bottle if he barks at them and only when he does this, its ok for him to bark when people come to the door (natural guarding instinct).

sounds like he needs to be brought out of his shell. you could try another exercise with him to get used to men.

ask your next door neighbour (the man) to come round, put sunny on his leash, stay calm and collective and ask your neighbour to stand still, let sunny sniff him. you need to tell your neighbour: dont make eye contact with sunny, dont touch him and dont move away when sunny approaches.

when you have hold of the leash you must be calm, assertive and dont even think about sunny introducing himself to your neighbour because if you get nervous then this energy will be passed down to sunny via the leash and he will then get tense ands nervous. you can move with sunny to approach your neighbour.

once sunny has sniffed your male neighbour, he will try to get his attention, but ONLY when he is comfortable with him can he make a fuss of sunny. he could also give him a treat, so that food is the comforter.

this does work, but to make it successful you need to be CALM, ASSERTIVE and RELAXED!

Re: New Dog Owner

My dad did that, and he kept barking. But he did sniff him, and got a bit used to him. I'm using the bottle rattle trick, but at times he jumps for it and I tell him no.

I don't want to upset him or anger him too much, because in weather like this people get angry, all hot and bothered and dogs can turn (I heard somewhere this lady had to dogs she had for 10 years who turned on her and killed her because the heat was getting to them).

Re: New Dog Owner

Also last night, because he's guarding and stuff, when I went to the toilet he came out of my mum and dads room and i let him sniff me, i went to stroke him and he julted back. This morning he was a little scared off me, but that soon passed.

He's most used to me in the family and follows me, even when someone else has treats.

ok, so you got him from a rescue shelter and he is going to be wary of you especially if you have only had him a few days.

only use the bottle when he does something you dont want him to do and when he stops, praise him and give him a treat. you can use very small pieces of cheese. he will learn that when the bottle sounds, he stops the unwanted behaviour he will get love and most importantly a treat!

try the other exercise i suggested in your behaviour post, because the soon you get cracking on this he will learn to trust you and the rattle bottle will be more successful.

just keep on trying and be positive about this, because patience is a virtue!
