Re: New Dog Owner

Yeah he was like a mad man. :P

He came in, sat on his bed and whined a little. I looked over to see what was wrong and he got up and started belching then he threw up.

He's resting like a baby now

Aww bless!
With regards to training sunny, it just occured to me that u could try clicker training with him. Once u have all his basic stuff sorted, you could then go on to teach him tricks. If from wat u say he is a GSD cross BC then i expect that he is extremely clever so that would give him some mental stimulation ( and plus when you have ur mates round- you can show off his tricks)

Re: New Dog Owner

Today as a interesting day.

It was his first time alone in the house today, he was alone for 2 hours. He was OK, he spent the time sleeping, as of what we know, and nothing broke.

We also took him to the beach. He was OK there, got a bit pulling on the lead. He barked at 2 people, and a rotweiler but was fine with everyone else and people's dogs.

We was going to let him take a dip in the sea, but didn't do it because there had been an oil spillage.

He was really good in the car, he was a bit scared when the boot lid went down. The only bad thing he did was he let one go with the windows up!

I have also been watching the Dog Whisperer. And on there, Ceaser said it's best to stroke the dog under his mouth because if it's above it makes them think they did something wrong. Is this true?

We did a bit of name call trainning. Me and my dad was with him at the beach with the flexi lead. I ran off a bit with him, dad called him and sunny responded and ran back to him straight away........ and I was running slowly behind him. He's helping me loose weight though.

Aww. Bless That's great new. He really has improved and the fact that he did a recall with your dad is fantastic- if anything it shows that he is bonding well with the family and you also know that his recall is good.
Also the fact that you could leave him for two hours with no probs is great.
Well done and keep up the good work

with regard to the food stay strong and dont give in - maybe put him in a different room when you eat.

if anyone does come up with a good way to tire them out please let me know too....!!!!!!

Hi i only just saw this post and I noticed you mentioned new ways of tiring out your dogs. I would definately advice teaching tricks. I do this with my collie as I have found that as has previously been said mental stimulation will wear a dog out much more than physical. We actually go to heelwork/ tricks classes once a week/ every other week. However if you prefer to teach tricks independently there are many great books that you can buy. One i would really advice is "Dog Tricks" by Mary Ray ( i expect u will have heard of her as she is the person who created the sport heelwork to music). It is a really fantastic book based on clicker training methods with loads of tricks that you can teach and a step to step guide of how to develop the desired behaviour.
also... tricks are great for showing off in front of visitors

Have u tried clicker trainign with him. It just occured to me that if he is a GSD collie cross I expect that he is very intelligent. I would definately advise the book above. It is great.
Below is a link from youtube. It shows a video of Mary Ray- the person who wrote it and what she has taught her dogs using clicker training ( the method used in the book). My dog was clicker trained right as a pup but I think that it would be an excellent thing for you to start with sunny to give him some mental stimulation and to allow him to bond even more with you and your family

stroking a dog who is not 100% confident on top of the head lowers the self asteem and it makes their confidence even lower, but if you stoke underneath the dogs chin then the head becomes higher making his self asteem and confidence higher.

the higher the head and tail the more confident the dog is. the lower the head and tail is the lower the self asteem and confidence.

Re: New Dog Owner

Ahh right. Now I know that.

I'll look out for a clicker coller.

I just feel bad about myself atm really. Can't believe I was thinking about taking him back. I'm a sick bastard. I love him to bits now!
