Walking is different, as the dog is choosing the pace a bit more, but chase games are faster and with him it was the impact of him pouncing on the toy to retrieve it that caused the stress on his joints

That's what my sister says.

Oh i don't know what to do..he loves his ball! Yesterday i toook him for a walk without it and he was like 'ok mom we're here, now throw!'

I don't want him to develop arthiritis at such a young age....but if i don't give him something to play with, he ends up picking up rubbish at the park and acts up a bit!

Maybe i should have done the ball throwing when he was a year old..

I managed this with my lab by using other games instead - which required him to use his brain / nose to find them rather than a straight game of fetch (with the associated speed and impact), either by dropping toys as we walked and teaching him to track back or by doing a search square and putting 5 - 10 small things for him to find. Also taught him basic tracking. All of these things knacker him out but without the speed and impact, and he still gets the reward of the ball at the end. He's also a boisterous big dog and I don't let him have fetch games for 'free' - he has to work for each throw.

Hope that helps. I also play hide and seek in the garden and indoors, he will find one, bring it back, and go out for the next, over and over again - usually play with about 10 things
