Keeping 2 male dogs in the same home

Hi, I have a 15 month old shihtzu/bichon frise male who has been neutered. I am considering taking my sisters 2 year old male shihtzu who has not been neutered. Tried introducing the 2 dogs today but the 2 year old who hasnt been neutered, just spent the entire time humping my pup.

If we get the 2 year old neutered, will this behaviour cease? Besides this the 2 dogs seem to get on very well.

Can 2 males live under the one roof happily?

I'd appreciate any advice at all as we would love another dog to keep our wee pup company

Re: Keeping 2 male dogs in the same home

HI

I have 2 males and 1 female and my sisters male bulldog who spends part of the week with us.

Yes they can get on fine. should you neuter? absolutely. The reason for this is because the one with his "bits" can be more dominant because he has a lot of testosterone.

All my dogs are neutered.

When I got my newest rescue and brought him home, he was not neutered and it caused havoc. All 3 dogs ganged up on him. I did get him neutered a week later and it did get much better. Even my sister's bulldog who is the laziest, most placid dog tried to attack him.

You may not have these problems. But why risk it?

x

Re: Keeping 2 male dogs in the same home

We've always had males and no problems. Our last 2 poodles were not neutered and got along fine. This time one is done and the other isn't. The one that isn't is 14 weeks old so still awhile until he would get done but he isn't because I'll be showing him and hopefully breeding him in the future. Not sure how both will get along once he's matuered. Our dog who has been netuered and still humps stuff so I'm not sure if getting him done would stop it all together.

Re: Keeping 2 male dogs in the same home

We have two male dogs and they are both now neutered, but when we got Rusty (terrier) he wasn't neutered and spent the whole time trying to hump our lab. Once neutered this improved (although he still will very occasionally!) and they get on marvellously. As long as you are in control of both of them it should be fine

Re: Keeping 2 male dogs in the same home

I had a male dog the same age as my male pup staying for 2 weeks and they were fine.
I think as long as you introduce properly, and take them walks together, also not leaving them alone in the house together and making sure your dog does not feel left out.

Re: Keeping 2 male dogs in the same home

I have 5 male whippets and a male greyhound only 1 of which has been castrated. They live happily with 7 bitches. The only time I have had a problem id when the 2 stud dogs were younger they used to argue when the bitches were due in season. Nothing serious though just all noise and no trousers as someone siad to me today. Now they are older they are not bothered they live happily together even when the bitches are in season.
