i have had quite a few breeds of dogs ove the years from labs to great danes. i currently have 3 different bully type dogs. and in my opinion bully type breeds have certainly been the more dominant hungry dogs to date. anyone else found this???

Re: male or female ???

Hi I have 2 Labrador bitches they are well paired up together, your yellow Labrador got consider is?. if you get a male and had the the chop he still will give a bitch attension when she is in season. The lots to think about.
What one Labrador puppy is like isn't the same for the next puppy.
Also got think about where your buying your puppy from is the parents health checke ect Hip scores and eye tests.

Have you had a look at Labrador Forum to give you some more advice? Good Luck

Jenny, I have worked with dogs and wolves for the past 30 years, and can only base my advice on experience, and case histories.

In my work as a pet sitter, and with trainers and behaviourists, it was found that two dogs from the same litter are very closely matched. For example one could be particularly dominant and endeavour to challenge the omega brother, who must constantly fight to defend himself.

There are other cases where fights will occur as a result of us treating our dogs the same and thus unwittingly raise the status of the underdog. This can make the dominant of the two see his brother as a constant threat and and continually feel the need to put him in his place! Castration of one of the pair can help, but you must remember that it does not always work.

I posted a thread a while back citing wolf behaviour and the way they establish hierarchy. This was disputed by another forum contributor, which was his right, but in my 30 year of studying the wolf I have read nothing to suggest this was not the case, so I stand by that statement.

I can quote from Jan Fennel and her experiences, since like me, Jan returned to the species from where each dog came in order to understand their language. We need however, to remember that nothing is set in concrete, and there will always be contridictions.

Re: male or female ???

will give plenty of thought to the matter, dont worry ive spoken to someone today who will have a litter due early spring , who will be happy to have daisy meet the pups when there old enough to socialise. So untill then i guess i can do a bit more research . Thanx guys its great that were all so different yet with the same adoration of our 4 legged friends . I too have raed the Jan Fennell books and yes she is great her tips really do work we rescently looked after a friends dog who had little socialisation from a pup and who showed signs of fear towards Daisy ,but gesture eating and ignoring his obsesive need to sit on your lap to feel safe worked . Unfortunatly we only had him for a week but he had chilled out loads in the short time we had him, Daisy on the other hand was so chilled form the word go that we never really needed to put into practice anything more than gesture eating and ignoring for 5 mins on arriving home she knows her place , but yes for anyone with leadership problems with there dogs its a must .

Re: male or female ???

Forums such as this enable people to swap their knowledge, and to share their experiences. Jan is a great lady. I actually knew her before she became famous, and her books make great reading. Indeed I have them all.

Equally, there are other behaviourists out there who may use slightly different methods of training, such as Roger Mugford. I have been privileged to work with Roger and what people may not know, is the court work he undertakes on behalf of dogs on death row. Jilly thank you for the info on Jan's work shops. I would certainly recommend them to anyone who wants to understand their dogs behaviour and she also has a great website.

I would just ask every owner to remember that each dog has their OWN personality and what works for one may not necessarily work for another. So keep trying until you find the method that works for your dog. With a little patience most problems can be solved.

Re: male or female ???

I agree you need lots of tools in your training and behaviour bag, unfortunately people are often looking for quick fixes, they present you with a dog who has been aggressive for eight years, and want it cured within a week. for those who stick at it they get results.

Re: male or female ???

I totally agree.

The pleasure of helping someone and their dog to overcome a behavioural problem is immense.
