Chews for puppies

Hello,

I want to give my puppy some chews. Currently he has a nylobone which he absolutely loves, but I want to give him a little bit of variety.

Someone suggested raw hide or pigs ears, but when I went to Pets at Home, I was advised against them, and to just keep with the nylobones as the raw hide goes soft and can pull their teeth out?

Louie is almost 14 weeks now, and loves chewing his bone, so I know he would relish something new!

Any ideas if this is correct, and if so, any alternatives for him? He has chew toys (they look like baby teething toys) which I freeze for him, and he will chew these for a small period of time, but he much prefers his bone.

Thanks

Hi, we always only use raw bones from the butcher.

I find that the raw hide goes soggy and can risk choking, they are also very high in protein and can give pup the runs.
I alsodon't like the pigs ears as they are so fatty and i never, ever give those cooked bones from the pet shop.
Good luck with your pup x

Our puppy has the pets at home ones and we haven't had any problems. She has the cigar shaped ones and the ones with the little sausage in that she loves, she chews those a lot.

Re: Chews for puppies

You could ask your local butcher for a marrow bone, or a rib
My dogs love raw bones!

You could also try raw carrot, either as it is or frozen to make it last longer.
My pup loves frozen bannana too. He only gets 1/3 at a time and he has great fun chasing it around the floor before it thaws enough for him to eat.

I'm lucky and have a butcher who gives away free bags of raw ribs which he also loves. Just make sure the bones are too big to swallow.

Thanks for your ideas, I might try the frozen carrot and banana - great idea.

I have a local butcher so will ask for some raw ribs or marrow bone - silly question - do they eat them raw or do I need to cook them?

Thanks
xx

You give them raw. If you cook bones there's a danger of them splintering as your dog chews on them.

At first I gave Otto his bones before his evening meal to make sure I had a way to distract him long enough to get the bone back, but after the first couple he started leaving his bones once he'd stripped them of tastyness!

Re: Chews for puppies

I've given Milo some rawhide bones, but the same size I give Zeus which is about a foot and a half long bone, spends ages on it, and it he gets a flappy bit that's all soggy he jumps around throwing it in the ai, rather funny and cute to watch, but I always have a close eye on him just incase he does eat bits.

Also I've found with Milo Pedagree Denti-Stix for the medium size dogs good for him... Okay about 10mins of him being quite, unlike his sister who wolfs it down.

You could also try a hockey ball, extremely tough, Milo loves kicking that around, and an added plus is that Zeus *my 3year old boxer cross* can't chomp it in half, like every other supposed "unbreakable" toy :/

Re: Chews for puppies

my pup has rawhide cigars, they are fine as long as u keep an eye on them with it. for pups i wouldnt advise funny shaped rawhide like the shoes and twists as they are more inclined to fall apart easier. stick with the pressed stuff.
i also give her Antos chews which are made of 100% vegetable, so really healthy too!

Re: Chews for puppies

We give our pup rawhide but only when we can supervise him having it to lower the risk of him choking. Would definately only recommend letting them have rawhide every now again, we didn't realise they could cause upset tums and let him chew as much as he wanted and cue pup having a touch of the runs. Since we took it away he has been better. We also got our a knotted toy which he loves to chew and pull on and throw and drag around! Again obviously we keep an eye on him to resuce any threads that come loose although it takes a lot of work for them to come away!
