Re: Advice – Which breed of dog.
I think seperation anxiety can be a problem with all dog breeds depending on the dogs personality. The way you behave towards the dog from day one is also going to make a difference.
A dog is a mans best friend and they don't like being left all day on their own, most love attention. Most common small breeds should be ok for you. We all have to live in the real world, which means if care is taken you should still be able to work and have a happy dog.

Re: Advice – Which breed of dog.
I'd really be crossing the Bulldog off your list also, as stated in a previous post they can be difficult to housetrain and it would be nearon impossible to do without a garden!
![]() Many don't like being left either, they do like the company of their people, if mine were left for more than a couple of hours I would come back to no home, they can be very distructive and extremely dirty dogs I've known Bulldogs punish their owners by messing in the house when they get left And that is the truth! ![]() |

Re: Advice – Which breed of dog.
hi again
I stick with what i originally posted i dont think anything bigger than a small / medium sized dog would be suitable - just to let you know my family have kept a couple of cairn terriers in the past - obivisouly a smaller breed dog - and both of them were ok when left in the house on their own (im not saying all will be - it depends on how they are brought up) - but they might be a breed to consider as they are generally hardy little dogs - and as for running my dad takes his current one on hikes through big hills and mountains - shes certainly an athletic little dog - they are very friendly and have great temperaments ( again the ones we've kept ) hope you find a suitable breed - susie and the gang

Thanks for all the helpfull comments! The search continues, one breed that keeps coming up is the Cocker Spaniel? What do people think about this? Also... to my surprise some large breeds have come up for example mastiffs. Is this realistic? Apparently they have a relatively low exercise drive? Do any knowledgeable members have a view on this? |

Re: Advice – Which breed of dog.
Have to agree with all on here. We have an AB, the only reason i agreed on having a dog is because i'm home all day. My mum has a Shitzu/pom and she works 2 days a week but i go round late morning and take her for a walk then my daughter gets her after school.
Personally like most have said i would wait untill you are settled in your new home and have made arrangements for the dog so its not left alone all day. Good luck in your search ![]() |

Re: Advice – Which breed of dog.
I think you need to be speaking with breed clubs and breeders of different breeds in all honesty. All dogs even those of the same breed can be total opposites.
My two are fine and happy to be left alone, they are not destructive but are crated when we are not around, for their safety and so they are not destructive, others I know with SBT's also work full time and their dogs are also happy to be left, but they do come home at lunchtime and they have exercise.Staffords are the whole are a very adaptable breed but they do love human company. |

I have a cockapoo which is a medium sized dog and he is wonderful!!! Very content no matter what. I say don't listin to the people that say you have to be home. Hogwash!
The fact is that MOST people work all day and have dogs. It is quality vs quantity. Not how much time you spend, but what kind of time you spend when you are together. Crimeny I have 3 dogs and both my husband and I work. The dogs are fine all day. Bigger one goes in a kennel the rest wait until we get home to go to the bathroom.Cockers are alright they can be really big babies and have bad seperation anxiety, and urinate accidently when excited or scared. Research them. A small/med breed is best if going to be in the house most of the day. You can even train small dogs to use a litter box. My friend has pugs and they just lay around all day, but can get up and keep up with her riding horses. Very laid back and mellow. I am an advocate of your local shelter, and the mixed breed. For some reason these tend to be the best dogs in the world. Breeders will not like that comment, but I don't care. Too many dogs die each year because of breeding and selling. A good share end up in a shelter anyhow. We have 2 purebreds from a shelter. Have fun, do your research and get what feels right.
