Couple of basic questions about a new pup please?

Just a quick couple of things that have sprung into my mind:

Our puppy book says to take pup outside for a wee whenever she wakes up, after playing and so on. If I take her out and she doesn't wee straight away, do I stay out with her until she does, or leave it a bit and then come back in and try later (hoping that in the meantime she doesn't do it indoors)?

Secondly, how early can you bath pups? Ours is very stinky, so I presume she's not been bathed yet.

yes id stay outside with him/her until they do a wee/poo. s/he needs to get the idea and when they do a wee or poo you give them lots of praise and fuss!
we just got Milly yesterday and the breeder said she bathed her in the morning so i guess its ok to bathe them this young (8wks) or you could get grubby wipes from p@h

Yip puppies poo,pee after play, eat & sleep... I would stay out with her until she did it... its all part of the package with puppies she will learn ..

If you wash her make sure she is warm after bath as you dont want to her to catch a cold.. or just a little sponge down mybe better if shes very young...How old is she?..

It's best not to bath puppies until they are 4 months because the shampoo takes out the goodness in the skin. Just use water if they really need it.

Well, I guess she didn't need to go, she ran around a bit then lay on the doormat and went to sleep. Will try again in ten minutes or so.

yep stay outside till she goes.

most breeders give pups a bath before going to their new homes so it wont hurt her.as mentionded previously make sure you dry her well. have fun x you can always buy a dry shampoo from the pet shop

Re: Couple of basic questions about a new pup please?

As others have said it's best to stay with them until they wee/poo, otherwise you don't get chance to reward them for it.
And the longer you are outside if they don't, the more chance there is of them being due to go if you go back in.

Bloody boring though isn't it!

And try not to get too disheartened by setbacks, we thought we had our puppy cracked (optimistic after only a week I know) but yesterday morning she has peed on the floor before we had managed to get a door open, peed again while this was being cleaned up, then while I was looking for the keys she was 'curling one out' in the corner. This became the order of the day and it was as if we had gone back to square one but with more time outside and better vigilance we are back to some sort of routine.

Re: Couple of basic questions about a new pup please?

Are you crate training?
If you are then what we do is take them out, wait 5 minutes if nothing is 'produced' then they are crated for 15 minutes then we go out again. This is repeated until they 'perform' the reward for which is time out of the crate with us and a treat.

Toilet training, chewing prevention and the like are a doddle with a crate and all ours have loved them and they know it is their little haven, all the kids and any visitors know that if any of ours are in their crates they are not to be bothered.

As above, you do not want to be bathing a pup until around 4 months, this is as much about their inability to regulate their body temperature as it is about stripping the oils etc from their skin.

Re: Couple of basic questions about a new pup please?

We do have a crate, but it's up to her if she goes in it. We (will eventually, once it arrives) have a stair gate to keep her in the kitchen (where the crate is) and the utility if we pop out, but currently she has the run of downstairs and she sleeps in a (ooh the shame) green Tesco delivery box with blankets in in our bedroom. Whether we'll increase the use of the crate remains to be seen, as she's only been here less than 24 hours. At the moment I want her to get used to our home and us.

And I'm not overly fussed about wees/poops on the floor, I've toilet trained three children and there are always accidents, it's what floor cleaner and elbow grease if for!
