At home but better off?
After looking out my bedroom window i got thinking. next door has bull mastiff dogs, mainly for showing, think there are nearly 8 altogether. 3 dogs live in the house, a bassett and 2 mastiff. however the others are in kennels. from what i can see the dogs get walked once a day by a neighbour and the owner is at home most of the time. i think the dogs are perfectly happy and have great kennels but what i'm wondering is as they are not working dogs and spend most of the day everyday in kennels, what is the point in having them? maybe i'm being stupid but just wondered if anyone else has dogs in this situation, i understand why people keep dogs in kennels but they are usually working dogs that get out to walk and work often.
when we had fletcher we kept him outside in a run while we were at work, with a dog walker coming in, this worked really well for him but he was in the house whenever we were in. i thought it was more stimulating for him to be outside with fresh air and a safer place than the kitchen and he was a very happy dog. but his kennel was just for when he was left so the majority of the time he was with us in the house or out on walks.
i seem to have gone off topic, my point is also this, their owner is at home all the time but they are in kennels not doing anything. i worked, with fletcher in a kennel some of the day and a walk half way through but when we came home he was walked and played with and got plenty of attention. so can a dog be just as happy with someone at work as with someone who is at home? hope this makes sense.
