Collar or not?

We are going to get Taz micro chipped, but we are not sure wether or not to get him a collar?

We are considering a harness for when he is old enough to go out for walks. My sister has a fully grown Jack Russell that they took in who was mistreated by her former owners, they were told not to use a collar, but my sisters thinks this was only because her Holly was very overweight and all the collars were cutting into her.

Re: Collar or not?

I think it's best to have both, as you will get your dog back much quicker if it is wearing a collar with your phone number on a tag. Also, I don't know whether microchips ever malfunction, but I suppose it could happen because you are advised to ask your vet to check it each year when your pet has its jabs.

Re: Collar or not?

I would say collar, when you are out for walks, as if you lose him you don't have to go through the vets et.c etc. to get hime back someone can just ring your number.
Harness's are designed for dog to pull, well depending on which harness you get. So you would be literally teaching him bad habits. I would say don't get him a harness unless he needs it. Stick with the collar, he isn't over weight

Re: Collar or not?

I read on the Kennel Club website all dogs must have a collar with tag as you can now be fined if they don't!

Re: Collar or not?

Legally, your dog has to wear ID at all times, i.e. a collar & tag with your name & address on it (phone number as well is optional). A tag saying the dog is chipped is also a help.

So you could have a loose collar for just the tags, but use an additional collar or harness for walks.

Re: Collar or not?

My pair only wear their collars when we are out the house. Inside and in the garden (its 100% doggy proof!) they do not wear them. I always make sure they have a tag that is easy to read too!

Yes it is illegal for your dog to be on public roads etc without identification. Plus if your dog did get lost and had no id tag, the person wuld be less likely to search for a vet and get your details than contact the dog warden or kennels, and I don't know about you but if a dog round here ends up in kennels theres an £80 charge!
I'd rather my details easy to find

Re: Collar or not?

You could always just have a collar for the tag and then use a harness for walking if you want. My dogs have a small webbing collar for their tags which they wear most of the time and then a leather hound collar which i attach the lead to. So if they managed to slip their collar they should still have their tag collar on.

Re: Collar or not?

Your dog will need a collar with a tag on it, regardless of him being chipped and wearing a harness

I agree with everyone- Taz'll need a collar even though his micro chipped.
