sick of hearing 'you're gunna have to get rid'
I just want a little rant really... around people who are probably going to feel the same as I do! I have a 13 week old collie puppy, some of you may have read my other thread about his biting problems... which have caused me lots of cuts and bruises! I'm really really fed up of my parents, sister, and friends telling me taht all I can do is get rid of him if he doesn't stop it soon!!!!!!
![]() ![]() I'm no expert, but I know he can't be expected to just stop it on his own for a start, and I was fully aware that getting a pupy would involve lots of time and work, not give up when the going gets tough and stick him in the nearest rescue centre! They really don't help either, no matter how much I ask them to support my ways of dealing with his behaviour, they refuse to listen and just think he needs shouting at!!!!!! ![]() Sorry all, just wanted to get that off my chest! lol |

Re: sick of hearing 'you're gunna have to get rid'
Aww thanks, it's made me feel much better having a rant.. and finding this forum.. I'm pretty sure no one here is going to tell me to give up and get rid, but help and advise instead! I don't know what I'd do with out the internet at times lol!
They, or I havn't put our kids up for adoption as soon as they do something we don't like, so why do it to the dog!!! |

Re: sick of hearing 'you're gunna have to get rid'
As you have a collie why not try training him to do things this will help as collies love to learn. Once he/she has the basics then you will be able to show everyone how well your young pup is doing. I know most collies like to be busy.

13 weeks
gosh id be saying at 13 months keep training. Some people expect a puppy to be the perfect dog. Well they arnet and have to learn just like any other baby.Wonder what they'd say bout my 2 week old pup who has bruised my 14 year old daughter!!!.........her fault i might add......she was holding pup for a photo to show new owner and gave her a kiss.....pup attatched herself to my daughters chin and gave a suck!!! Lol a nice purple bruise as a kiss ![]() |

Re: sick of hearing 'you're gunna have to get rid'
That's a perfectly valid rant!! My dog was alegedly taken to a rescue for play biting, the woman couldn't be bothered to take the time to teach her not to do it
![]() Friends and family can say the most hurtful things without even realising. Stick to your guns and long term, when you're flying around the agility course at Crufts, they'll see just how wrong they were ![]()

Re: sick of hearing 'you're gunna have to get rid'
Just saw this on the front page and thought I'd say I had the same problem with my house rabbit. He chewed on the door frames and wallpaper and all I had was people lecturing me on what to do. I actually kicked my dad last week for making jokes about rabbit stew when he knew he was dying. And someone told me to just hit him over the head with a shovel and put him out his misery!
I think your more than right to rant, some people just don't understand our pets, no matter how big or small they are. Tell them all to 'swivel on it' This was my rant. I feel your pain He is not 'just a rabbit'!!! |

Re: sick of hearing 'you're gunna have to get rid'
If they are only moaning about his puppy nipping then I would take no notice of the moaning but I would do something about the nipping.
Can I make a suggestion that might just cure it (I've done it with all of my dogs and it really works pretty quick) even though you may think it's a bit harsh ![]() When your pup nips at you, if it's your hands then instead of pulling away and squealing, push your hand into his mouth, not hard and not too quick, just firm enough, then hold it there until he spits you out and tell him 'No' while your hand is in his mouth. He should spit you out and pull his head away but do not take your hand out until he does. The other thing to do, if he's biting at other parts of you is to grab his chin with fingers under the chin and thumb in his mouth under his tongue, press down and hold whilst telling him 'No' and again wait until he tries to pull away. Another thing that will help you with this is the 'Gentle' command. Get a treat and before giving it to him tell him 'Gentle' if he tries to snap at it, pull it away. Keep trying this until he is actually gentle and tries to take the treat really slowly and of course then he can have it. Again, this is something that I've done with all of my dogs and it does help. Collies are one of the most intelligent breeds there are and they learn very quick. Best of luck with it ![]()
