Is the crate too big?

Hi,

I have been wondering whether the crate I have been using for my Havanese puppy is too big. The crate is 61cm x 46cm (24" x 18").

He is just over five months old at the moment and weighs about 2.5kg, he should be 4-5kg when fully grown. He is currently 9" tall (to his shoulders).

He does go to the toilet in there when left and at night sometimes but not every time; but I think he would do the same if he was left in the kitchen and not his crate.

No that doesn't sound too big at all to me.

Our pup is 4 months and she sleeps on my daughters bed so that we know when she wants to wee or poo because she starts crying. She usually sleeps through till about 7 am though now.

Thanks Jazzy,

He is happy to sleep downstairs and if he does go at night does it very quietly, no whining or barking etc, so can't really tell if he needs to go out or not!

When he is left he complains very loudly and usually pees (sometimes poos) quite soon after we leave him. Am hoping he will gradually get better with time as he grows up.

He unfortunately did not have a great puppyhood - breeder I later found out works all day and they were all just left in a pen, so he is not bothered at all about messing his crate and he is a bit clingy to me.

Hi,
I have 14 week lakeland pup who i initially put in a huge cage i had for lab pups but he was consistently messing every night in the cage.
I then changed to a smaller cage and he has since been clean all night.
Coincidence because he was more settled or smaller cage i don't know but may be worth a try.

Re: Is the crate too big?

I put a travelling type of cage inside a bigger crate and I have found that works well. Even at 6 months she has plenty of room for sleeping but if she was desperate she could find a place inside the big crate though there isnt really room to walk around. I find she stays in the sleeping cage until I let her out in the morning and has never messed in it. I have a feeling that if she had been just in the bigger cage she would have had enough room to be tempted to mess at night.
