How long should we walk our puppy?

Hi all

We have a 3 month old shih tzu. He has LOTS of energy, and really enjoys going out for walks.

How long should we walk him for? The guidance we've read suggests about 20 minutes per day for a puppy his age. But that's not very much if we are taking him out for the afternoon... and its not enough to expend all his energy!

If we keep him in too much he gets a bit overexcited when playing. Taking him out calms him down. We don't want to cause him problems later in life (with joints etc.) but we also don't want him to be frustrated and unhappy.

Many thanks

Leon and Ruth

Re: How long should we walk our puppy?

Its 5 mins for every month of its age, so 3 months is 15 minutes. But this can be 2-3 walks a day, each lasting 15 minutes. so total, you can walk approx 45 minutes in separate walks.

Re: How long should we walk our puppy?

Bella is 4 1/2 months and she gets walked around 20 minutes most days. I have taken her out to shows etc so she has walked for much longer, well, more like stolling, but she has breaks inbetween and got carried for some of it!

You can use up his energy by working his mind. Time to crack the clicker out.
