Dog Walking

Do you walk your dogs on or off the lead? If on the lead do you stick to a standard lead or use a long line or flexi?

We try to walk our dogs off the lead as much as possible as I think they get much more enjoyment out of it and obviously get a lot more exercise running through the woods or across fields than they would on a lead.

Unfortunatly though a lot of the dogs we board just don't have a good enough recall to be let off the lead so with these we try to give them as much time on a flexi as possible.

Re: Dog Walking

Pepsi walks off lead everywhere she keeps to heal unless told too. the only time I would put her on a lead if I am in a built up area such as the town thats because of the amount of traffic and people buzzing around .When she's on lead I use a standard one

If I am doing road work, def on lead, but over the park a good 2hour free runing they love to play with the other dogs, its funny to see them do the recall when they look behind them to see if there friends are still there...

Re: Dog Walking

Izzy is walked off lead most of the time, when its an acceptable area for her to be. I see some people with dogs off lead walking along a main road. Although Izzy has excellent recall, you just never know what can happen.

She walks on a slip lead, if people come towards us with their dogs on a lead, she goes back on. Its just common courtesy really.

My customers dogs are split 50/50 as to off lead walking, the ones who cant be off lead are either through having no recall or issues with other dogs.

Re: Dog Walking

That's about the same as me! It pees me off seeing dogs walked by the road off lead!

Most of the dogs we get have to be kept on lead through having a poor recall, probably 8/10 are kept on lead. We won't take any dogs that show any signs of aggression towards dogs or people.

Re: Dog Walking

Ahhh Alan, this is where we disagree

You know that our dogs have always been exercised on a flexi in public places, for reasons which I have given in earlier posts.

Since our sitters come under our insurance policy, they too must exercise dogs under control, since if accidents occurred when dogs were off lead, the insurance would be void.

The other day I was walking with a clients dog by the side of a busy road, when a little Westie came hurtling across the road! Her owner said nothing, just grabbed the dogs collar and carried on walking!!!!

It beggars belief that people continue to walk their dogs on busy streets without a lead

Re: Dog Walking

While walking on the pavement we always have them on a standard lead , but then when we go to the local park we let them off lead to run free for an hour or so always engaging them in play fetch, ball, hide and seak , and some off lead heal work 6that we have started doing with them .

Re: Dog Walking

Standard lead most of the time. Still trying to build Katies confidence up and atm I'm doing quite a bit of training with her so standard lead atm. When the weather is a little drier I'll be taking her up the mountain nearby more so she'll get plenty of off leash training so she'll be able to have time running off lead as well, but for now on lead all te time. She gets about 2 hours of running around each day normally in the garden playing ball with my toddler, lol, the dog gives up before he does most of the time.
