Views On Neutering Dogs

Recently we have had a lot of requests to board entire males and we have to say no as experience has shown 9/10 entire males will constantly want to hump my neutured male (Milo).

When we suggest to people neuturing they come out with strange reasons not to, like "we were told they would put weight on if we neutured him".

In my opinion I think it's better for all dogs and bitches to be neutured unless they are to be shown and/or bred from. There are numerous benefits of neuturing many of which have already been highlighted in various threads across the forum.

Our Trinny (girl pup) will be neutured as she is fully developed and Jayjay (male) will be done if we decide not to show/breed him.

So........ whats everyone elses opinion on neuturing?

Re: Views On Neutering Dogs

My personal opinion is to leave males entire but to spay bitches that are not shown or to be used to breed from.

As many of you know we had planned on breeding our bitch and had also planned on having her spayed after two litters.
My bitch developed Pyometra which is life threatening,we were 24 hours away from losing her,for this reason I would suggest it is more important to spay bitches than to castrate males.

Why do you think it's better to leave males entire?

I didn't say it was better just my personal choice I guess.
We've only had one male before and he was left entire with no problems.

Re: Views On Neutering Dogs

My opinion is that both male or female should be done if not showing or breeding. As Sallyanne has pointed out a bitch left could lead to pyo or unwanted litters if a mistake was to happen which we see times over these days, plus other health issues. Males should also be done if not used for showing/breeding due to health reasons again - Testicular cancer being one of them - it can also prevent any unwanted matings - it SOMETIMES can help with behaviour problems too and I did say SOMETIMES - its not a quick fix but I have seen it help with some males.
It can lead to weight gain BUT with a careful diet and excercise its not a problem.

I think that both males and female should be done if they're not being shown or bred, i think that's what most people think.

I also agree that dogs and bitches should be done if not breeding or showing. I think it only frustrates the dogs (and owners) if they are left entire. Especially later on in life.

Yeah but you must feel it's better that way or you wouldn't have left your male entire? Just trying to understand your point of view!
