Insurance - good or bad thing???

Just wondered how many people on here have pet insurance?

When we had just the 1 dog we decided not to bother but now we have 2 I'm wondering wether or not its a good idea????

Just never convinced insurance companies pay out when they should so is putting some money aside instead a better idea?

just interested to know how people feel about it.

thanks xxxxxx

Re: Insurance - good or bad thing???

Hiya

We have 3 dogs and they're all insured. I'm like you a bit iffy on whether the pay up etc.
At the mo we're claiming for our oldest, but because of his age (12) we have to pay the first 35% plus the excess. The claim went in nearly a fortnight ago and they've yet to settle it. We now know the underwriters of this firm are known for being terrible.
If we had a lump sum put away just for dogs (minimum £2000 i'd say) then saved monthly i'd probably not insure all of them, but from the past couple of weeks experience i'd say that £2500 doesn't go far once tests, scans, vet hospital stays etc start.
I'd be frightend not to insure them now.

Yes, all our animals are insured.

Thankfully, as otherwise the vet's bills in the past would have been astronomical - one of our ours racked up over £7k of bills in one year

Definately do your research though - a cheap quote may not always work out to be cheaper in the long run.

We learnt our lesson the hard way. We never used to have pet insurance, but then a cocker spaniel of ours developed an illness called erythaema multiforme - basically he used to get lesions in all his mucous membranes. He developed this when he was about four years old, and he lived to be 14 - and during that time he was on constant antibiotics and steroids. It was costing us up to about £80.00 a month most months - and I'm going back some years 'cos he passed away almost 8 years ago. Since then, we have always had our animals insured - the peace of mind knowing that whatever happens you're only going to have to fork out about £50 - £70 - depending on your excess - is worth it.

Up to now, touch wood, I've never had a problem with insurance firms paying out. Just by the law of averages, the more animals you have, the higher the likelyhood is that one of them will need expensive treatment at some stage - and you only need it to happen to one animal, once a year for you to benefit.

Re: Insurance - good or bad thing???

All our cats and dogs are insured. We've only had to claim once with Milo and didn't have any trouble getting the dollars back. It wasn't a massive claim but at the time it was a good job we had it.

Milo is with Halifax and they are a good price, good cover and paid out quickly on our claim. The cats are with tesco and the cover is good for the great price.

Re: Insurance - good or bad thing???

Our vets have thier own insurance ,for both of our labs i pay £35 ish a month we never have to pay for consultation it covers us for up to £1500 and £1000 if they need to be refered to a specialist . If they need meds or dressings its cost of med less 20% as were on thier scheme , Daisy had xrays after christmas and all we had to pay for was her sedation , were having them spayed soon and as its a voluntary op we have to pay but we have 10% off so instead of £130 each dog its £103 . Its also inclusive of there yearly booster jabs , I know many cases where vet bills have exceeded our cover but fingers crossed we will never be in a situation where they will need such drastic vet care .

That's a good scheme, wish our vets did something like that!
